Positive By-Law Change Regarding Tarantulas As Pets In Oshawa, Ontario

Well everyone, it's official and I wanted to update this thread. As of the Oshawa This Week's Newspaper publication on January 3rd, 2013, Oshawa (Ontario/Canada) has approved the proposed exotic pets by-law - Tarantulas are now on the allowed pets list for residents in this area. I am...

Positive By-Law Change Regarding Tarantulas As Pets In Oshawa, Ontario

Hey everyone, it's been a couple of yrs since I posted here, but I'm back again and wanted to share some positive news for those of arachnofans living in the Oshawa, Ontario area. For the past 4 years, some pet stores here who sell (or want to sell) Tarantulas and some current Tarantula...

    Cyriocosmus elegans

This is a dwarf species with mature sizes at approximately 2" - 2.5" (for females) I have a pair of Cyriocosmus elegans and 5 slings as well. My male matured quite tiny - about 1" legspan and my female is double his size. Slings are about the size of a mosquito when they are old enough to...

OH NO! My first G. rosea pairing

Just my 2 cents here, but for what it's worth - here u go... You're female is big enough to breed at 4" and I wouldn't worry about hte male being an inch larger than her - it's probably mostly legs lol. As for your female bearing her fangs, we have seen this during mating as the male...

Egg sac ready to hatch soon

At 6 weeks, you certainly "should" have eggs with legs if the eggs were fertile to begin with. What we do at this stage is get the female to drop the egg sac (distraction methods of your choice) and then take the sac. We then carefully open a small hole in the sac to inspect the eggs inside...

    I'll be really upset....

I'd love to offer my opinion on it's gender, but ur picture isn't the clearest there. Is there any way you can get a clearer picture by holding it so that there is no plastic/glass between the vent and the camera?

    C. Crawshayi

Well here's my 2 cents on this species.... We purchased 2 C. crawshayi's on October 6th 2006 (Because I love them) that just about an inch or so in size - pictured below: In that year, they have molted at least twice and are now about 3". Sorry I have no recent photos because they...

    Cyriocosmus elegans breeding

Congrats on the mating - I hope it was a success - it's a shame the male didn't make it but let's hope his legacy lives on. I have a pair of C. elegans that I've tried to mate several times. The male is willing but as soon as the female makes any movements, he's outta there like lightning...

    post molt question

We have 4 A. versi's that we got as small slings. They all molt roughly around the same time, within a week of each other up until their last molts as they are getting larger now. We are presuming that the slower molting one's are females and the more regular molting ones may be males. This...

    Poecilotheria tigrinawesseli

I had a very interesting encounter this past weekend with our 2.75" Poecilotheria tigrinawesseli. We were doing some ventral shots for another thread and at 1/2 time (this was pretty much an all day effort to the tune of some 200+ pics), I took over picking up the Tarantulas for photo shoots...

    anyone tired of crickets chirping?

Only male crickets chirp - but get a few in a bin and they can sound like 1000! I like the idea mentioned above about putting them on peat and letting them breed all the while growing their food. I have a few questions in that regard though: 1) Can it be any grass (like normal back...

    Nameless Tarantula

I don't think it's a male lasiodora - we have one and I've seen many others - that one is missing the colour combo on a male lasiodora. I still believe it's more likely an ablopolisum or other closely related brachypelma. Rosana

    Nameless Tarantula

Gorgeous tarantula, to me it looks very much like a Brachypelma albopolisum - male - as it's very leggy but I don't see any tibial spurs. I could be wrong - but that would be my guess. Rosana

    Sling enclosures

I have never seen/heard of Hobby Lobby here in Canada or in Ontario where we are. Is there a manufacturers name/phone/addy engraved on the container anywhere that may help me find them online? Rosana

    Needing help with Latin names

You are correct Phil - I think for some it's just become habit to refer to them as "latin" lol. I've been guilty of it myself  Rosana - BedroomEyzOfBlu

    Sling enclosures

That enclosure looks great  with the exception that you need a hide of some sort. We use ceramic pots cut in half length wise - they come in all sizes from vry tiny to large and are available at any dollar store. I have yet to be able to find that enclosure type here in Canada...
