I have been finding these at work a lot lately. I put these 2 together today. The girl is about 4.5 inches long and the boy about 3.5 inches.
These were caught in a business area in Overland Park, KS (Kansas City Metro)
I can get better pictures, just tell me which angle you prefer...
I caught a couple of these in western Johnson County, Kansas today. I thought they had a cool pattern.
I also collected some Thamnocephalus platyurus- Beavertail fairy shrimp
On ebay, search for seller name dadasis. I know he sells this same species, in fact I think he uses one of my photos (with permission).
Yes, the do grow their own shell, and this species lives about 6 months. The clear shelled variety lives about 2 weeks.
The first time I ever found one...
Not sure if anyone is into snails, but I collected a few of these in a roadside ditch in Neosho County, (SE)Kansas over the weekend. They are much larger than the usual snails I have found in the past. This one is about 3/4 inch long. I found an empty shell closer to 1 inch long. They seem...
Yes, same deal as Triops, dry out and add water again. This is only the second time Ive had these, and I wont know if any were female for a few months more. I only have 2 this time.

I collected this waterbug while dip netting a creek in SE Riley county Kansas this afternoon. although he doesnt look as ferocious as a predacious diving beetle, Im curious of what species it is and what it does eat.
Thank you,
I noticed these today on the tops of what I believe is Giant Ragweed. They are small bugs about 2-5 mm long. What struck me as peculiar is how their back sides stick up which I assume is caused by them eating the plant. If anyone can get me a close ID I would appreciate it.
Thank you
