Potential, if you get a Grammostola pulchripes, you won't regret it. Even if you get one of the extremely rare feisty ones, they are still beautiful and easy to care for. =) I still miss mine (it's in my avatar).
Unfortunately, all T's must die some day. This sounds exactly like what happened to my 7.5-year-old Grammostola pulchripes before he died. (And yes, I'm sure he was that old, because it had been four years since his ultimate molt, which revealed hooks.) He stopped eating for months when...
I came here to get information about whether or not it's healthy to feed my adult female Lasiodora difficilis a mouse, and I find a pissing contest. Lovely. Moderators, can we shut this thing down and leave it at Stan Schultz' informative comment, complete with sources? That's all this thread...
I think a good rule of thumb is to feed your tarantulas something that is no larger than the size of their abdomen. I fed my Lasiodora difficilis one pinhead cricket every week when I got her as a first instar, but that is a particularly hungry species. Good luck.
I guess it's not restraint for me, since I don't view animals in the same way I do Pokemon (gotta catch 'em all!). I know others feel differently, and tarantulas are fascinating creatures, so I can't blame them.
I think individuals within species vary in their temperaments. My Lp gets fed once a week, and she even attacks water. I think she's just mean. I look at people holding their Lp's and think, "Aw, I wish I could do that... mine is so cute." But I can't.
So, OP, it's possible that some people...
This is puzzling to me as well. As 99% of the people in this world fear spiders (yes, that is a made-up estimate), it seems like there aren't too many people out there with advanced degrees in Entomology doing studies about tarantulas. This community (Arachnoboards) is the closest thing I've...
Ok, I see what you mean now. Thank you for clarifying. =) I'm sure that your tarantulas will be fine on hornworms for a while, but maybe they should eat a variety of things. I like to switch my tarantulas' diet every so often, that way they are getting everything they need. I go between...
Nobody will like my suggestion, but... Is it possible that you have your hands too full with your mother's health issues to be keeping tarantulas right now? I mean, personally I would get rid of my tarantulas for the sake of my mom's sanity and health if she ever became deathly ill again (yes...
Yay, pictures. =)
I bought a spider from the LPS labelled "L. difficilis" two and a half years ago. Turned out to be a Lp. I'm not too upset; she's gorgeous. =)
