Maybe they're just getting too old, and breeding too late? I keep my lobsters in a large 'rubbermaid' style tub, with an inch of peat for substrate, and feed them all sorts. I have had no fatalities as of yet (except for the ones that are old).

It will depend on the time of day, most probably basking to gain some heat for the night. They won't need to do this in captivity, due to carefully regulated temps, but in the wild, I expect they will fairly often. Obviously depends on the time of day the photos were taken, dusk then most...

nope, that's just what they do, especially when they are lazy. You'll find that if you go in her cage and make a disturbance, the tail will be right back up.
