That's just awful. Not only that, but it sets a bad influence to the kid who buys a tarantula and thinks that's how you're supposed to keep them or that the spider will remain in sight at all times.
Plus, that still doesn't excuse the fact that they keep dozens of crickets crawling the cage at...
If people want to see the epitome of an awesome T, I let my B. Smithi out for a walk. She's usually pretty nice (sometimes flicks hairs and scurries but never shows any signs of real aggression) and is very pretty.
And if I'm feeling ballsy, I'll hold my P. Striata giant. But nobody else is...
Maybe they do this so the irritated T owner buys them.. nah who am I kidding, they're just morons.
The thing that irritates me the most is when they literally give the T nothing to hide in or under. Saw an OBT in a quarter inch of substrate, water dish, no hide. The damn thing made a web on...
A very common thing to see people saying on this site is, "How could you keep just one? There's so many awesome Ts out there." But..
If you had to get rid of every T from your collection except one, which species/tarantula would you keep above the others? Personally I'd keep my M. Balfouri...
The only justifiable reason I can think of for digging it up to see it is if you're buying the tarantula from someone or selling it. The buyer will want to make sure you didn't bury a dead T, make sure it's healthy, etc.
I got my first T at 8 and kept it just fine. I still have the tarantula and I recently turned 19. My first pokie at 12, still have that too. I don't see the problem as long as they aren't an idiot about it.
My very first H. Lividum. Bought it from a reptile shop and the guy who sold it to me told me it would be mean, but I had no idea. It wouldn't just give threat poses but follow and strike at whatever I was using to drop crickets or move things in the cage. Not to mention it's speed...wow. I have...
Looks of a P. Metallica, but instead of blue and yellow on the legs, they would be half green and half blue plus red markings. Super timid. A love for dry soil. Huge, like 14 inches. Super weak venom. Eats like a gbb. Creates awesome webbing and above ground tunnels. Loves to sit out in the open...
^ Finding a girl who can put up with tarantulas is 100x harder.
Anywho, I've never hid my hobby. When I was a kid, I always brought my spiders to school for, "show and tell". I'm 19 now and still have those ts.
