Some questions from someone new to the hobby

Okay, I'm going to try to tackle a few things, here... As far as the beginner list, those are all great. I'd also consider adding a Brachypelma species or two to that list -- I'm particularly fond of B. albopilosum (widely sold as, I believe, Honduran Curly Hair?). I'm not big on arboreals...

    costa rican zebra tarantula

seemanis are very nice (although one of mine was a highly effective escape artist). I would echo the recommendations of others, for Grammostola aureostriata or Brachypelma albopilosum, too -- really great Ts. G. roseas are ok, but I'm not as big on them as on the others.

    Hemiercus -- Questions

Great. Thanks, Eric...that will be helpful to me in making a decision.

first millipede. have a few questions.

haven't used vermiculite for these guys (mine are in a peat/topsoil mixture) -- I'll leave that for someone else to address. Do make sure, however, that they have plenty of room to burrow, which they love to do -- I would recommend substrate approximately as deep as the length of your pede.

How many tarantulas are in your collection?

Well, at one point it was in the high 20s...then I moved internationally, and am just starting to rebuild, so... 4 Ts 4 Amblypigids 4 Millies 5 snakes 8 lizards and various amphibians and small fish

    Hemiercus -- Questions

In looking to expand my collection, I have come across Hemiercus slings, at what seems to be a reasonable price. These are great-looking Ts, but I want to get a bit of info. before I get them. There seems to be very little info available out there. I have kept a variety of NW Ts (Grammostola...

    H Lividum Leg regeneration

Will probably be back after its next moult. I bought an Aphonopelma seemani several years ago that was missing a full leg, and it was back after the first moult after I got it.

    H. Lividium

Exactly what I was going to say. Wait until it gets bigger...it's hard to sex slings any way, because of their size. I usually wait until mine are at least in the 1" (usually 1.5-2") before even trying to sex them. I'd say if you're feeding it pinheads, it's probably too small to determine sex...

    Tarantula abbreviations....

Several abbreviations that you will see on here...I'm sure if you spend some time, you'll catch on soon enough. A couple of very common ones are: GBB: Greenbottle Blue (Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens) OBT: Orange Baboon Tarantula/Orange Bitey Thing (Pterinochilus murinus) for the most...

    Python regius question(s)

This species is known to be picky about food...mine eat eagerly some weeks, and won't eat at all, other weeks. Leaving the mouse in the tank overnight (if feeding f/t) may work. I've also never heard of ventrally sexing a snake -- I'm quite sure they need to be probed (but I have been known to...

ROFL...is it sad that this quote was one of the high points of my day, so far?

    Crappy pet store name

I do get a chuckle out of pet store names...a couple of years ago, I saw a T for sale at a pet store, with the label "Viennese Tiger Tarantula." I still chuckle to think of hunting for Ts in Vienna, and believe the spider they had in the tank was, in fact, a tremendously overpriced Aphonopelma...

    G. Aureostriata Spiderling help!!!

At any rate, that is a very plump-looking sling...it can go a couple of days without food, no worries! G. aureo are great.

    Brachypelma Albop

When I kept Brachy albos, they grew quite quickly as slings, but slowed down as they got closer to 3".

Feeding Males to Females (Read First, then Vote)

Interesting how things are so split down the middle. I have to say that, while I wouldn't intentionally drop him in there to get et, I wouldn't have a problem with letting them live together, until nature ran its course. I tried to do this with a pair of L. parahybana once, but the male kept...

Infestation of Crickets in my T's Cage!!! (Newbs Beware)

Not to mention, as implied, cricket hatchlings make a great food source if you have slings on hand...if you don't, then it gives you an excuse to go out and buy some!! :D

What do you guys and gals think? Picking a second tarantula:

GBBs are awesome. I loved the ones I had (until I moved back to God's country, and had to sell them). On the other hand, Brachys are pretty great, too. I never had a smithi, but the 3 species I did have were great. But go with the GBB...do it...you know you wanna... :wicked:

    Venezuelan tiger tarantula

Ryan, you wouldn't happen to be in Pineville, NC, would you? If so, they've had that T for months and months. I've laughed about it both times I've gone in in that time...it does indeed appear to be an Aphonopelma seemani, and for $84.99!!!

Largest Prey of Spider in the Wild

Yes. There have certainly been reports of this. Although it obviously depends on the size of the snake.
