Low protein, overcrowding or insufficient hiding spaces would be my top choices for cannibalism.
I never had any odor problems using dry cat, dog or fish foods in roach enclosures. Space the dry foods to opposite corners from water or fresh food sources. Odor is relative though...a dozen...
I worked 3rd shift in a warehouse like 10 years ago and in the night the lights in the warehouse would attract alot of bugs. We had this huge guy from North Philadelphia(considered one of worst neighborhoods in philly crime-wise) who had dove under a large steel table and was screaming like a...
Its been forever since I raised Zoophobas. I recall my first generation of beetles had the highest mortality rate. I think dehydration stress during the larva and pupation stages was a contributing factor but I also saw a good bit of the beetles killing each other as well. All of which...
I havn't been around the boards in awhile and I currently have no tarantulas. It was last year and my neighbor sold their house. We share a wall. The tenets they were renting the property to were less than hygienic and created a pest infestation. They bug bombed the whole house next door and...
Two dozen crickets make more noise and stink more than 500 roaches. You just need to educate and point out that insecticide companies have made it their business to give all roaches a bad name and hope you can use reason to overcome all the bad press your significant other has been exposed to...
Just say you are shipping glass or something fragile. I recall one enthusiast in the past used to claim their shipments were Christmas ornaments. Don't sweat the little stuff. :-)
I always used the color of the fangs as a guide as a precaution. Tarantulas also shed the lining of their mouth and stomach when they molt and I always worried more about digestive issues from feeding too early than about broken fangs especially in larger species but that is more than likely...
Most new owners obsess over things like temp and humidity. Eventually you'll get bored of it. The same goes for feeding...eventually the thrill wears off and you cut down to feeding once every week or two. The most important thing to stay on top of is that water dishes are kept full and even...
G. rosea is a good beginner species becasue it is bullet proof but bad becasue they are quirky and they do odd stuff that confuses the owner. Some move dirt, some do push ups , others with spread themselves out for no apparent reason and other will refuse to walk on the substrate you provide. No...
I never stressed over temps for my tarantulas. If I was comfortable in a t-shirt then everything is fine. I wouldn't stress over temperature unless you are trying to breed or you live somewhere that is prone to extreme temp. shifts where some control is necessary.
There are also claims that dark olive oil helps to increase breeding/decrease mortality. I used to offer some bread or dog food soaked in olive oil as well as citrus to my colonies. I never had a problem with breeding numbers but then they are roaches. I also never tried a control group to see...
You might consider looking into some of the different types of Koi food. Some pet stores even have free sample packs of koi food. I fed a roach colony for close to a year off of free sample packs of koi food.
The hormone is generally used as a form of pest control around stables/livestock to curb fly populations. It affects the molting cycle of the larva so they don't mature. The few cases where the larva do pupate they die or the adult is sterile, IIRC. I wouldn't use giant mealworms as a food...
Blaptica dubia, Blaberus Discoidales and Lobster roaches(I forget the scientific name and am too lazy to look it up) are considered the best species for feeders. The lobsters can climb smooth surfaces which is a big negative.
I disagree with you here. I think that the initially higher prices that make new, more rare and/or highly sought after species harder to obtain for the average hobbyist is a good thing in the larger scheme of things. It provides a good measure of security that only people who are better...
