Well got home from work and poor "Lightning" is now for sure 100% dead (cue dead parrot scene from monty python).
Thanks, and yeah it is scary, but it helps if you wait for a deal and buy multiples of each sling (especially if they're tiny) to better your chances (which is what I should've...
Thanks! I think it's fair to say I gained more than I lost haha. I really should have ordered more than 1 T. gigas sling though. I could've just raised them to the 2" mark and then traded or sold the ones I didn't want to keep....ah well, hindsight is always 20/20.
Yeah, whatcha got against us gingers? ;) Probably because of my hair color, my moto is "buy ALL the orange things!!" Especially when it comes to Ts haha.
There are no Ts I hate, but you couldn't pay me enough to care for a S. calceatum. I've heard/read too many horror stories, and even...
The bad news: my 1.2" T. gigas was busy webbing all over its container on Sunday (it had refused food for 2 weeks and had a darker coloration so I knew it was preparing to molt). It webbed up the exits and entrances to its tube web on Monday morning, so I left it alone until this morning, when I...
I have seen all 20 of my Ts do this when they're afraid or trying to hide/shield themselves from bright lights, loud noises, or excessive movement in general. Relax! :)
I have a T. violaceus and a T. gigas sling that do exactly the same thing! They'll kill it, wrap it up, and "save it for later." My T. gigas didn't eat its cricket for 3 days once. Nothing to worry about :)
4 years, no bites :) I usually don't handle unless I have to, except when I do educational outreach, where I'll frequently handle my A. chalcodes and my A. avics.
If a sling (spiderling) doesn't eat the food within 24 hours, take the food out of the enclosure. The sling could be ready to molt and thus not interested in food, and the food could potentially hurt the sling during its molt! Pre-killed mealworms, pre-killed pinheads (if it's a small sling), or...

I agree with Marga, no special temps or humidity. I keep one side of the substrate slightly moist for my sling, which I bought at .25" DLS and it's now about 1.6" DLS. So far I haven't noticed any super defensive behavior - it just runs and hides when I open the lid for maintenance. Cage...

Welcome itsjustt! If you're looking for a positive ID on what Aphonopelma species it is, I'd suggest looking into CVHS (Central Valley Herp Society). There are a lot of tarantula people there, and they usually meet around Stockton and Manteca. If you bring your guy to one of their meetings...
Every time one of my Ts unexpectedly lunges for a cricket, I jump :D
Also, my heart jumps into my throat if one of my arboreal Ts unexpectedly teleports to the top of the enclosure when I open the lid. A startled gut reaction, for sure
Even though I know my Ts won't do me harm, the...
Most of the species I have are either out in the open all the time or don't move from their "usual" spots. So when I open the lids to feed them they'll become "alert," but not really move that much or show much of a response toward the stimuli of the lids being removed. The two clear exceptions...
Also, if you fed it too soon after the molt (before the fangs darkened), it could have damaged its fangs and have trouble eating until the next molt. There's more info on that here:
