I didn't go too much further with this thing; I didn't really like how the foam branch turned.
However, I have another project in mind using the same general concept. I will just use a nice manzanita branch for it. I might have pictures on the way pretty soon.
Thanks!
It's pretty easy, too. With the materials and plants and stuff on-hand it came together pretty quick and care is real simple too. The avic seems to like it in there.
There are some kinds of mold that prefer drier conditions.
The best way to discourage mold is to increase air circulation. Try using more screen vents and adding heat sources that will encourage convection air movement.
Manzanita wood is less likely to mold than grapevine wood.
This is a crummy photo, but I wanted to shoot one quick while she was out.
With her molt the avic assumed this amazing dark cobalt blue all over. She is also about 3/4" larger.
Hey I look forward to seeing those setups as you get started with them!
Here's another quick detail shot from the other night. I am going to remove most of these plants for the replanting project.
I found something fun on the Internets. This is a photo album with shots of Avicularia spp. and tube webs in their habitats...
Avicularia sp. from Bolivia, Beni province
Hey thanks so much.
Please let me know whenever you might get rolling with a planted viv project. I am pretty good at coming up with ideas and other stuff.
Here's the cork round that I am using for the hide/trunk feature. I built up a bunchof Gorilla Glue around the top opening so that I would have something harder to drive the stainless steel screws into.
And here's the whole thing. I am considering sanding down the cork texture to make it...
I have an adult ghost in here now. The largest individual molted one last time and now it's almost three times bigger than its siblings. I don't know why the others are so far behind(??). I need to move them out of this enclosure before they get eaten by the big one.
Super glue should be safe for use soon after application, but it is not very good for bonding porous materials.
"Mantids" sounds better, but I understand that "mantises" is more scientifically correct.
Here's an orchid that would probably be a good choice for this replanting project, Barkaria spectabilis. I used to have this one--this is my picture--and now I'm sorry that I sold it off. It's a pretty common species however and I should be able to find another one.
This orchid is a good size...
I think that I want to change this to make a planting more like what I have in my 12 X 12 Exo, with pretty short terrestrial plants planted into the bottom and with epiphytes planted up around the top of the manzanita. I don't have a recent picture, but you can see below that some of the plants...
Where do you live? If you have any kinds of ponds or lakes in your area you should be ale to catch stuff like that yourself, although it is getting late in the season. Water scorpions are often abundant in aquatic weeds near the shore. You could also invest in a portable black light and head out...
Last night I got a box in the mail with eight or nine different Tillandsia. They are such cool little plants. I'm editing and uploading specimen pictures right now. Here is T. aeranthos "Miniata".
