the intriguing part is that mine are that brown for a month or two - then they become black again for the majority of the molt cycle ... then it repeats

Scolopeon you have me excited all over again. I can't wait til Brett jumps on this thread. 43mm x 35 was her carapace size. I haven't flooded her out since the molt - which is really exciting.
