Official identification- it was indeed L. mactans. See, all they would have had to do was ask us... I think Audax's comment about the motive of this whole report might just be spot on...
Walked through my garage the other day and found these guys just hanging out on the ground. Wonder how many I could have found if I went through all the boxes and cardboard!?...

Just experience really. They do appear very similar sometimes, but generally the abdomen of Steatoda are "flatter" on the dorsum and more eliptical-shaped than Latrodectus. They are all cool spiders though, and if you want a widow-ish spider without the potential danger (even though they're...
My sister called me yesterday to tell me about the "Brown widow" that was found in Haysville, KS just south of Wichita the other day. She said it was a huge news story and everyone is freaking out. I looked up the story, here it is...
I didn't have ime to read this whole thread so I apologize if I'm repeating others' comments or causing any redundandandancy.
they are mactans and not variolus. The dorsal chevrons are slightly yet distinctly different between the two species. These are mactans markings.
the fact you found...

Nice job on the catching of the recluse- they are cool spiders. Unfortunately for your leverage, if your mom ever does a little research, she'll realize you didn't save her from anything. This is, of course, with the understanding that members of the Loxosceles genus (with their fused...
Man I can't stand this stuff. This is like trying to decide which car is faster- a Mercedes McLaren SLR or a McLaren F1. They both get well above 200mph, one has faster accel and the other has faster top speed, so what are we even talking about?
I would rather not be bitten by either...
not sure where all the confusion is coming from. Yes each widow is different even among species. That's ok though...mactans have their characteristic hourglass as do hesperus, variolus, etc... They may each be different on two individuals of the same species but all members of a species still...
Yeah, actually it is really tough to distinguish between the two of them. I don't know why, but I've seen mature females that are long and spindley and mature males as expected like that too. The mature males don't give you the typical pedipalp clues other spiders do. Tricky with recluses...
"Gimme an M!" "Gimme an R!""Gimme an S!""Gimme an A!"
What's that spell!?
"MRSA!" Yay!
Regardless of how clever my little rhyme is, S. aureus, be it MSSA or MRSA is no joking matter. Your photo you posted and the fact that you said your face is scarred in multiple places leads me to...
Not sure about that. We have a ton of them around here and they all look pretty much the same. I think they are some of the nicest looking salticids in addition to the P. apacheanus we have here as well.
Raise the temp to 80-85 as stated before. Keep it there for a week or so and then spray about 1.5 good sprays of water on the far side of the tank in the sand. This will get the humidity up just enough to trigger a molt, hopefully. You'll know if it works for this guy if it goes and sits on...
-Huh? No the 'T' and the 'h' are NOT pronounced separately. That's wack.
Thare-ih-DEE-ih-DAY.

the "dae" at the end is debatable...
well, unfortunately the answer to your question whether it is dying or molting can only be answered for sure by whether it dies or molts. With scorpions the symptoms can be very similar for either behavior. Typically tho I have found there to be more sluggishness and apathy going along with...
