I used to breed blatta leteralis and fed them dog food that I put in the food processor, and then grapes, raw collards, oranges, squash. It seemed to work well, but then again I was feeding the roaches to a bearded dragon.

If it were me, I would put it in a temporary enclosure, completely scrap everything in the existing enclosure, clean it out really well, and use a good amount of DRY coco fiber as a substrate, enough so your smithi can touch the top...

Wow, this thread took a turn to nastytown.

+1 to the exoskeleton have some elasticity right after molt. Otherwise, it wouldn't "give" enough to get out of the old one. The TKG briefly mentions it as well. Gray is spot on about filling out. I've noticed my rosea stretching a lot right after a molt.
