I'm an old school collector, who currently has a collection of 0. My brood has matured, been traded off, or given away after not being comfortable having old-worlders around a couple curious toddlers.
She's still kickin
My beautiful female regalis I started this thread about is still alive, and seems to be a healthy 7"+. Not since this post have I noticed the behavior.
Weird.
I've actually got about a 3.5" bicoloratum - that's gone on fasts for at least 4 months at a time....I just keep it dry, and throw in a cricket every once and a while to see if it bites...
Re: #2 - EWWWW!
Re: #3 - EWWWW! At least they weren't in your bed....
Depends on size IMO. If they're almost fullsize, I'd just let 'em be for a while. I had a B. albo (curly) that was the most active thing ever, then buried herself for about 5 months without showing. She now comes out every once and a while...
If you're talking <2-3" juveniles/slings - I...
Sorry for the delays ;)
As of now, the colony appears to be fairly steady. I have several large giganteus that stay visible, as well as the regular discoids running around happily. I have noticed that the "older" looking adult roaches have had their wings gnawed on, but other than the ratty...
where do those stupid little things come from? It's kinda like when people thought maggots just were "created" from rotting beef....it's like - they're just there! I've had problems in dry enclosures too, but significantly less than in moist.
I agree - dryness typically WOULD leave you safe - but I keep pretty much all of my cages dry and have still had intermittent mite issues. I think predatory mites might be the way to go, or pillbugs. I'm gonna look into the predatory mites myself...
And finally - here's a shot of the underside after I euthanized it. The mites are apparent around the mouth area, and both sets of booklungs - more pronounced on the lung on the bottom right (in this view)....I'll get the videos up when i can.
Here is the weird pose he would get into - let it's arms hang backwards and upside down while twitching - then a rabid attempt to climb the side and so on.......
Pictures
Here is a pic of the ornata when I found it - in it's new cage - it hadn't had time to web yet. If you look towards the bottom left, you can see where the mites were apparent; a completely clean cup the day before:
rknralf - did you notice any mite presence with your P. miranda? These mites irritate me - I've lost 3 total spiders, in which mites were found at the time of death - though not necessarily before. I can't figure out whether they are secondary to the ACTUAL problem, of if it's the mites...
Thank you everyone for the warm sentiments :) I've made arrangements with Kerry to put the bugger on isopropyl alcohol, and ship USPS priority by the end of the week.
I'll try and get pictures and videos up by this weekend...
Update: I euthanized the spider as soon as I got home from work - 7/20. It seems that it had completely lost control of it's body movements - and I didn't think it was going to pull through. This will be a specimen that goes to Kerry @ RIESM. I got some video of it right before I popped in...
(NO videos yet - still trying to get posted. sorry :( )
Okay -
So I found a couple of mites in my ~3" P. ornatas delicup 7/18/04, and I immediately moved it to a new container w/new substrate etc. I noticed that the spider was behaving normally, but a little jumpy - and rather than sit...
My genic is weird with food, probably a little bit bigger than yours. It used to take anything I'd try to feed it - now it will only touch crickets. Try giving it different types of food?
Just curious as to why? Mine stays in it's web-hole 99.8% of the time. Very pretty though, when I have seen it....
I don't think the versi is underrated - in fact, I think it's pretty highly raved about.
I personally haven't heard a lot of people talk about P. cambridgei (Trinidad...
Okay, that oranges thread was hilarious.
Maybe if you tried to feed to a hungry female it might go for it? I have a hard enough time getting matured males to eat anything, let alone something weird.
