Tropical terrarium inspiration please! + a question about heaters

Those pine wood hides mold quite easily in high humidity. You're better off with cork bark or Mopani wood. Mopani is very heavy and must be well supported if used. Here's what a pine hide looked like after a few weeks in my Emperor tank.

    Millipede baby

Bumblebee millipedes are one of the few species that produce offspring year round. Ivory (and Scarlet) millipedes produce offspring once a year. I usually start seeing baby Ivories in August and September. If you're seeing baby millipedes this time of year, they're Bumblebees.

    Millipedes and isopods

I've had my AGBs for 3 years and they've reproduced every year. The yield is not high, around a dozen offspring per season, but from what I've read that's not too bad. The dwarf white isopods as so small, I doubt they bother the eggs.

    Millipedes and isopods

I keep Trichorhina tomentosa (dwarf white isopod) with my AGBs. My starter colony hitched a ride in the moss that was used to pack my AGBs during shipping.

    LP enclosure tips?

Good to know. I'll save some space and money.

    LP enclosure tips?

I'm in the same situation. Although my LP is not as large as yours, it probably will be after its next molt. I plan on moving mine to a 10gal tank and eventually to a 20gal long.

Where do you get your sling enclosures?

You don't need that many enclosures to raise a sling from 0.5" to 3.0"; three should be sufficient. The less rehousing you do, the less stress you place on your spider and the less money you spend. For my 5 NW terrestrials, I went from 2"x2"x3" Amec boxes to 4"x4"x5" Amec boxs to large Kritter...

    Why questions

Can a tarantula even know the difference between being in the wild or being in captivity? I would think that such a concept is far beyond their neural capabilities.

    First attempt at false bottom

The problem with the exo-terra background is that it presents a fall hazard, although once your Emperor gets settled you'll probably rarely see it out of its burrow, let alone climbing the background. There are also reports of scorpions getting trapped behind these backgrounds. It doesn't...

    First attempt at false bottom

I would add much more substrate and remove the background. Otherwise, it looks nice.

    False bottom emperor enclosure

The only reason for the mesh is to prevent the scorpion from digging up the gravel. The disadvantage to using the mesh is that the scorpion could get trapped under it. That's why it's important not to have any gaps between the mesh and the walls of the enclosure if you choose to use such a...

To web or not to web...

Is that nylon window screen you're using? I know RobC uses nylon screen for his arboreal enclosures, but I feel safer using aluminum screen. Although, if your spider really wants to get out, aluminum screen won't stop it either. There have been posts here describing Ts chewing through...

    Tedious….

You don't need to have water sitting in the gravel layer all the time. You only need to add water when your substrate starts to dry. This will vary depending on substrate depth, ventilation, heating, climate and other factors. I like to use coco fiber for substrate. It retains moisture...

    Tedious….

Save your money. You don't need either the humidity gauge or the mister. As long as you keep the substrate damp, the humidity in the air will be fine. You can either pour water directly on the substrate when it needs it (once a week or so), or, you can employ a "false bottom" in your...

Idea, guide for building Plexiglas lid for fishtank

Use Plexiglas/acrylic that is at least 1/8" thick. You can buy retaining clips at your local LPS or make your own from PVC pipe.

    Quick arboreal enclosure question

I did some searching this morning and found this mini cam latch from Zoro. http://www.zoro.com/i/G0408703/?category=7385 They come in black and chrome and cost $3.26, plus free shipping with orders over $25. The latch also functions as a pull knob/handle so you save a few bucks there as well.

    Quick arboreal enclosure question

I make my clips from rings cut from PVC pipe. Dip them in boiling water for 15-20 seconds and they become pliable. Then, shape them as desired with a pair of pliers and let cool. The clips in the photos below are cut from 1/2" diameter pipe. If you need more contours, just use a larger...

    Modifying glass aquarium canopy

If you want to use your glass top, just leave it ajar so you have a 1/8" or so gap along one edge. If you need more ventilation, widen the gap; less ventilation, narrow the gap. For 2.5gal tanks, I use tops cut from a 10"x12" acrylic picture frame replacement pane sold at home improvement...

The Secrets to Breeding A. gigas

They're probably Trichorhina tomentosa (Dwarf tropical woodlice). The AGBs I ordered from Wards a few years ago had T. tomentosa hitching a ride in the sphagnum moss. I received enough to start a colony.
