My female bit me a while back, but I definitely deserved it. She had always been docile and easy to hold. Anyways, she started sitting outside of her hide with it's head touching the ground, it looked like she was eating soil. So I got the bright idea of picking it her up and flipping her over...
The tarantulas in question are a G. Rosea, a B. Albopilosum, and a G. Pulchripes. I'm setting up new tanks for all of them.
I'm asking because for the last few months the G. Rosea (an adult) has just been sitting in a corner on the substrate, even though I have a hide for it (a butter tub with...
Thanks. Do they have to be the bulbs labelled "daylight"? The critters are garden snails (Helix Aspersa) lol, sunlight and plants are beneficial to them but they prefer cooler temperatures.
I'm building a new viv and I'm a bit stumped about lighting. It's not a tropical set up so I don't need a heat light, in fact the animals I'm keeping prefer temperatures around 70 degrees F so a heat light would be detrimental. But all of the lights I've found specifically for growing plants put...
Here they are. I tried to remove some of the old exoskeleton- I was somewhat successful in loosening it in a few spots but I stopped because it was still attached to the body in patches (and the tarantula went bezerk when I started messing with those areas. I found the spinnerets and the anus...
The substrate is coconut fiber. I just realized that much of the "deformity" is actually where the old exoskeleton didn't fully attach- I'll hold off on the pictures for just a bit. I don't know why she decided to start walking around before the molt was complete There's also a small bit of...
I feel really bad about this, because I hadn't been doing anything but filling this tarantula's water bowl and didn't notice that it had molted or was injured until a few days after the incident when I went to feed it. :unhappy:
It appears to have molted cleanly (it walked about 6 inches away...
This is suggested all of the time and some people might disagree, but you really can't go wrong with a G. Rosea. They're hardy and docile; the easiest tarantulas that I've ever cared for. G. Pulchripes is similar but a bit larger and showier (well... that's a huge oversimplification of it but I...
I have an old aquarium that's about 2 ft. long by 1 foot wide and 1 foot tall (I have no idea how many gallons that is lol). It's going to be more like an insectarium of sorts, so no frogs or geckos. I'll look into those plants though.
My big concern is the feeder. I'm not a fan of roaches and...
That's awesome! I wish that I had seen this thread before I post my thread about self-sufficient terrariums. :8o
Have you had any luck getting the feeders/beetles to breed? When I tried it everything except for the isodpods and some mites just slowly died off.
This is something that I've always wanted to do. If you a had a large enough container how many species do you think could be kept together in a (reasonably) self-sufficient vivarium?
I know nothing about plants, but I'm assuming that sphagnum moss would be good as well as live ferns. As far...
I wouldn't be so quick to change out the substrate, my tarantulas don't always stay in their hides. Just give it a few days to adjust to it's cage and don't touch it for a while.
Don't worry, I don't have an injured tarantula. I'm just a bit curious about some of the treatments that I've read about recently.
I got this one from "The Tarantula Keeper's Guide" by By Stanley Schultz and Marguerite Schultz. It lists a recipe for tarantula Ringer's solution, which...
That's quite disappointing. I'll have to do a bit of searching the next time that I am in west Texas.
This is getting a bit off topic, but since you're familiar with the area have you ever tried raising the large yellowish scorpions that are common around here? I was thinking about setting up...
This thread is over a week old now, and you've probably already made up your mind but I'm curious to find out what you did.
Keep in mind that most of your invert pets don't feel pain, if they can eat and drink and live a mostly normal life then there's nothing wrong with keeping them alive...
I'm thinking about looking for some vinegaroons to raise and breed. My dad had told me stories about finding armies of them in the crawlspace under houses and such, but I have yet to see one. I thought that it was because they only lived in Arizona and West Texas desert regions (I'm around the...
