Theraphosa sp. "Burgundy" Marketing Scheme or Natural Variation

Hi Jmugleton, I am keeping T blondi's for about 25 years now. I have fixed my most beautifull specimen on a frame and kept some molt skins. Lately i discovered on a Dutch forum an interesting point. All new T's sold as burgundy type have no hear on the patella. I have a couple (male and female)...

how fatal is the venom of S. gigantea or galapagoensis?

I see here a lot of talks but no tries, and that's good because one's bitten by a big tropical centipede (doesn't have to be a gigantea) you will wish it never happened !!!! I know from a missionary in Guatemala who was bitten in his sleep by a huge centipede and he describes the pain as at the...

    Sexing centipedes PLEASE HELP

Tacoma: You wont be the only one with this question. Same problem here :) I wish I could ID the sexes as well. I own 4 Chinese giants. Are these the same ssp as Hong Kong Giants? Maybe we can try to look for external differences. I'll post a few pics of the back legs and head soon. Maybe you...

Sosippus floridanus (Funnelweb Wolf spider) Info??

Never heard of it. Seeing the info on below website it looks a very beautiful and interesting specie.... http://bugguide.net/node/view/91267 http://bugguide.net/node/view/88344 But I notice this specie also has synonyms Lycosa Loennbergi and Lycosa transversolineata...

Neon Blue leg close to death.

Hi Hedrus, That might be the reason then... I suspect that plings are more sensitive to the right airhumidity then adults. If you have a big enclosure, what you can do in future is to leave the substrate on one side rather dry and the other side wet. If the pling needs a wet or rather dry...

Neon Blue leg close to death.

Hedrus, did your pede enclosure had enough air ventillation? Ofcourse, air humidity has to be rather high but I think the air quality is equally important. When having plings, I think you can do best by daily refreshing all air of the enclosure. Hot humid not refreshed air causes fungus and...

    Centipede escapes

I think many pede keepers experienced an escape. Scolo's are escape experts. One's I had a gigantea who lifted up the plastic cover of it's enclosure (faunabox). The cages were located in my bedroom but even after a very thorough searcht I couldn't find it back. 2 weeks later, while watching TV...

    Sexing Scolopendra subspinipes

Oups :8o Thanks for your info Steven. That makes it extra difficult to breed them then. I am so much surprised since subspinipes is not rare in the hobby. I hope people having plenty specimen of the same specie might notice something.... :( Well, I guess this answers the question raised...

    Sexing Scolopendra subspinipes

Here are a few pics showing the difference between male and female (although no subspinipes). I guess this difference applies more or less to all species.... http://www.scolopendra.be/breeding.php See also this thread... http://www.arachnoboards.com/ab/showthread.php?t=15454&page=2

How do you know it's adult?

I wonder, when raising your pede from pling till big size... how do you know it's adult and available for breeding ? As far as I know, you can't judge on size since adult sizes may vary a lot. Are there any ID keys to know it's adult?

    exo-terra glass terrariums...escape proof?

Hi Andy, Exo Terra tarrariums are safe because they are equiped with a doorlock ! (which is not a luxury if you want to keep Scolopendrids). The metal gauze roof of the terrarium is strong enough to resist their fangs. Unfortunately, (at least in my opinion) the Exo Terra terrariums are NOT...

    power feeding

Soulsick, what you are saying is amazing :) In fact, I was always convinced that oxygen level plays a major role in the growth of invertebrates although I never saw this British report. But I could not believe you can notice a difference in just one "spider"-generation.... In prehistoric...

What is the second biggest pede???

SUPER ! Thank you for your update Steven  I will never doubt a true expert's decision :worship: I am convinced now it's gigantea. I am also thrilled that BLACK gigantea seem to exist (cause the centipede's color was as black as black could be). Only the skin after molt looked...
