Only as they grow or if there is a life threatening problem like mold or possibly a bad smell. Some of the terrestrials, like Brachypelmas, can go a very long time without changing anything.
I would second the P. cambridgei. Much more out in the open and quite impressive in a subdued sort of way. If you get them as slings and learn to work with them as they grow I don't think you will have much trouble with them. I have had way more close calls with chondros and tree ATBs then with...
My experience with these scorps is that they will do OK in a communal setup as long as they are all about the same size. Mixing smaller ones with larger ones didn't work out well at all (or for the smaller ones!) for me. Very cool little scrops, easy to keep, active, and almost always sting...
Be careful when drilling the Beanie Boxes. Most are made from styrene and it chips and cracks easily. If the bit gets moved at all side to side the plastic will crack. I always drill them on a drill press to avoid that but it still gets a crack every now and then. Also keep the plastic build up...
I agree with P. murinus, although I have found rosies fairly straight forward. I put a male in with 2 of my P. murinus females several months ago and finally gave up on them being gravid. Much to my suprise I walked into the T room the other day to see hundreds of tiny P. murinus in the 2...
My inlaws place in Kentucky is swamed with them. There are tens of thousands of exuvium on the lawn and huge swarms of cicadas! They are so loaud that you can hear nothing else and it actually hurts your head after a few minutes! Really cool. Most of them I have seen up close when they were...
If you look at the temp. curves for the areas most desert dwelling Ts live you find great swings. Really hot in the day to almost freezing at night. As the rosie is a terrestrial T (from everything I have read or seen) the only protection it gets at night or in the heat of the day is to crawl...
I worked in a pet shop for a bit last year. Our wholesale price list always had adult B. smithi on them for around $50 each. These were nice big Ts. Kinda makes you wonder where the wholesale place is getting them from doesn't it?
Cutting the PVC with a pipe cutter will not release anything bad, it has to heat up. Put PVC on a band saw and it melts through it as much as cutting it. Most plastics only off gas when they get hot, which is why they say not to pop your leftovers in the microwave in a plastic container. I have...
ABS definately does smell. PVC can be just as bad though, especially if cut with a power tool or heated. If you get PVC to the point of smoking (doesn't take much) it releases dioxins, some of the most toxic chemicals on earth. Many consumer groups have even gone so far as to label PVC as the...
Anything made out of plastic will off gas when heated - be it by direct heating or being cut. Some will even off gas at room temp (they all do to some extent). Cut ABS is just as safe as cut PVC if you let it sit a while before putting it into a T cage. Most of my Ts have split ABS pipe for...
Most critters are unafftected by poison ivy and oak. Humans are just unlucky that our immune system is sensetive to it. It is often eaten by deer with no ill affects.
That is some interesting info. I have 5 smaller P. lugardi females that I was going to wait to breed, but if they will produce at 1.5-2" legspan I will start looking for a male. I also have a big 4-5" legspan female, I will breed her last in case she munches the male. At what size do the males...
The new set up looks much better. As for species I would go A. chalcodes, but trying to ID any aphonopelma from a picture is hard. Especially when the taxonimists don't have the genus figured out completely.
There are far more P. lugardi on the market that are wild caught than captive bred. If is was an adult specimen at a pet shop then it is 99.99% that it is a wild caught T. Good chance she is gravid, or she could be getting ready to molt.
There are a few guys in the area. If they have stuff for sale it is usually listed in the for sale section on here. Also try checking out the Kentucky Reptile Expo in Shelbyville, KY every month. Usually a few captive bred Ts there.
