Hapalopus sp Colombia Large Egg sac!

I've had several females paired with a couple boys (most recently eaten by two of the girls) and one of the ladies just laid a suprise clutch today. This is my first captive breeding of spiders! Let's hope they hatch! :-) FWIW, males and females were the same age from the same purchase with...

Aquarium Silicone or Expoxy to attach hinges and hasps?

Epoxy will take up water and weaken with exposure. One part of its reactants is often water soluble, I think the hardener, and the other not. Once the epoxy cures and outgasses it's effectively inert. On the exterior of a container you have no concerns; just vent the area anyway. On a closed...

    Macro lens for photographing T's?

I also use the 100mm f/2.8 L-series and it's really nice. Have the MPE65 and a couple extension tubes and a ringlight that work pretty well with them (ringlight adapter required). Been wanting to get the 180mm for doing outside photography but I haven't seen much cause to have it for big...

    Heat cord

Just spread it out on more sides or get a shorter one to be safe. Don't force it into tight radii on the corners and it won't be a problem. Mine is controlled by a Herpstat and it's able to maintain 80 degrees at the center of the tank with no problem; the top has a screen cover and then I...

    Heat cord

'on one side'? Fudge which part? I've got one of these spirally wrapped around a 4' long glass terrarium on the inside for keeping all my deli-cup dwellers warm. Runs halfway up four sides of the enclosure. You don't want heating elements crossing and you don't want tight radii.

    Zoo Med Cage Modifications

The 'glass' content (as in silicate glass content) of 'Plexiglas' is zero. Commonly encountered plastics sold as 'Plexiglas' at stores like Lowes or Home Depot are acrylic and Lexan (brand name for polycabonate...) and any of their relatives or brand names. FWIW, I've been using wood-framed...

Is Hot Glue Safe for my sling?

Anything plastic will not mold; you could even cut up strips of coke bottles to be your 'fake plants'. Spiders don't demand great expenditures to care for. While they may require 'high humidity', my observation in reading is that a lot of posters on this board are overzealous in applying...

Is Hot Glue Safe for my sling?

If you're seeing that much mold it seems like your humidity is way too high. Why would you cover a perfectly good piece of wood with glue/plastic? Just skip to the endpoint and put in plastic foliage or equivalent; plastic forks, spoons, and knives seem like better options.

    treating wood

I don't know what other people plan to remove but sometimes I receive wood products with questionable appearances; mostly I worry about mites on my critters and bacteria (from a sick animals container) when trying to cleanup existing goods. Bad things tend to dig into porous surfaces so you...

New book published: 'Spider Behaviour: Flexibility and Versatility'

I had pre-ordered this on Amazon early in the year and it finally got shipped last week. Due to numerous other demands I've only thumbed through it a couple times but there's a section on plasticity, cognition, and learning among others. A wide range of topics are covered that seem to be...

    My fellow cali peeps...

In Orange County- no big deal. Temperatures are fine and if not I can run something in my fireplace to warm the place up. Since we're talking local effect for an earthquake I'll assume that some kind of social infrastructure is in place or is actively being replaced and that if not immediately...

    Cant Stop The Mold!!!

Having elevated humidity and having a swampy substrate are two different matters. The versis probably don't even use the substrate so you definitely don't need that. Swampy substrate will grow mold, as you know. If you were to replace the wet substrate with a dry substrate and an open source...

    Caulking and Silocone

A critical concern for these types of products when used with animals of any type is the particular chemical vapors that are emitted and the duration for which these byproducts are emitted (called outgassing). Even if something claims to be 'food safe' (assumed to be rated by contact with...
