My argument is that gamefish and wildlife protection in most states is for the reasons exactly as you described....the financial benefit that is gained from hunting and fishing having very little to do with protection of animals that need protection. Sure there are areas where there are more...
I saw this last night and it just reaffirms my thoughts on game wardens. Sure they do some protection of declining wildlife but their focus is enforcement of laws pertaining to common game that really don't need much protection nowdays. Who cares if a couple of deer get poached. I bet many...
My parents were wanting to organize a family trip with the kids and grandkids in Vegas this August and after seeing these photos I am really tempted to act on my idea ofdrive out there from NC do some poking around a few days before meeting up with them. Would love to find a couple of dwarves to...
Saw a show on National Geographic channel that had a spot on Augacephalus breyeri in South Africa discussing translocation before a development. They were handling it a lot and it didn't show aggression. I have A. enzendami and wouldn't consider holding them. Think the show was Freaks of...
It is possible that those are all VERY closely related species and that we are witnessing speciation occurring, hence the similarities in appearance and the close proximity of ranges. It could be that the uplift of the Sierra Madres separated different populations of an ancestral tarantula and...
I would have to second the Ephebopus genus. I have cyanognathus not murinus but they are both lightning quick just like an OBT and I have gotten threat postures with fangs extended and venom collecting at the tips. They burrow lie many of the OW so cage changes will be interesting too...
I have only cooled one tarantula....an adult male OBT and it went on to father 50 slings over a year later. I don't think it does any harm but don't know for sure. Interesting about moths. One thing to think about is when we get tarantulas shipped in the warmer months a cold pack is often...
I did a powerpoint presentation to my daughter's and a neighboring 2nd grade class last year but was told no live animals. The presentation was requested by the teacher that I come with live animals to talk and once the principal approved the presentation he made a no live animal stipulation...
I would say tarantulas are more difficult to deal with since they can climb almost anything and are super fast (OW that is). It should be a piece of cake dealing with venomous scorpions although there is a greater risk of serious injury or death from a sting than from a bite of any of the above...
I was also going to say check out Phormictopus. Great Caribbean genus that most have nice metallic sheen to their carapace and femurs. Males are breathtaking once mature. Get big and love to eat.
Spiderlings are VERY easy to sneak in (especially those in small condiment containers or straw segments)....based on what I've heard from others that is.
B. albiceps. You will always see curlyhairs cheap and available but not too often do you come across albiceps without having to look for them and special order them. I see curlyhairs for sale as spiderlings and juveniles all the time in the US so wouldn't pay for shipping to get one of those...
I have 2 of the 4 and would recommend them in this order:
Indian violet (2nd prettiest)
H. crassipes (assuming it is similar in behavior to H. gigas)
P. irminia
OBT (very fast and hard to control once they are moving, although they are the prettiest of the 4)
I have never had problems with...
Shoulda proofread. I meant I am not sure how long he is able to stay virile before becoming too old. I was concerned about the female molting after mating and messing up my plans so I plan on keeping the male for a second mating if needed.
Any tips would be most appreciated, especially if...
I stay away from Avics for that reason. I have only had one that was hardy...A. urticans. I have had worse luck with common pink toes dying in mid molt as well. That is the only genus I have trouble with. I have many others that have not given me problems. interesting that the GBB died in...
I started a burrow and she seems to have taken residence to it. I assumed it would take 2 weeks or so from now to get her settled and figured I would try to mate them in mid march. She is still eating so not just ready to molt but it looks to have been awhile since the last due to her worn...
I have a cobalt blue male that matured over Christmas and just this weekend got him a mature female that I want to him to mate with. I read the breeding report and it seems that cooling after mating is a key to success. What should I do to ready her now for mating in a month or so. She did...
I am sure everyone here has bought a wild-caught tarantula at one time or another. Remember...all of the tarantulas we have descended from the wild whether one generation ago or a dozen. Where do we think all of the "new" species that keep appearing originally come from and many of those are...
Interesting comment. I have a wild caught A. hentzi from Missour that eats very little and probably had no more than a dozen food items from July 2011 and December 2012 when it finally molted. It had molted recently when caught because its molt was beside it under the rock. Luckily it turned...
