I had the same problem with 5 P.regalis 2cm slings - the first two exhibited symptoms within a week of receipt and died within days. Two of the others developed symptoms when they were in the 3 - 4" range and had a long (6 week and 8 week) illness before curling up their toes. The last matured...
Mine dug hemispherical silk-lined pits as slings and only started a proper subterranian life when they reached the 1.5 - 2" mark, though this may be due to a larger enclosure with deeper substrate. Now they're around the 5" mark they spend a bit more time outside in the evenings.
Thanks for the replies - appreciated.#
Glad to say she's shifted about 4 ton of substrate over night and is now the owner of a lovely "des-res" almost the full depth of the substrate.
Now I shall be able to complain to myself that I never see her.... :D:D
When I've performed any maintenance on my Florida Huntsman enclosure (with around 100 5mm slings in it) I stand it in a roastin tray with about an inch of water in it. When they make a break for freedom they don't try and cross the moat. After I've finished I collect any escapees with a pooter...
The word "pain" refers to the feeling that humans experience when exposed to certain stimuli and it would be difficult to directly transfer this to an invert. However, any animal will move away from a potentially damaging situation - I'm sure that if you were to burn the leg of a tarantula it...
Got 3 x 3cm slings last June and even at that size were savage hunters - they quickly became my new favourites. As they grew and were rehoused in a set up with deep substrate, they dug themselves deep multi-tunnelled burrows and have calmed down considerably. Almost docile.
If they're out in...
So it is.....
I was just going to say that, with the exception of my OBTs and new girl P.muticus, I'm more wary of my G.pulchra than of any of my other beasties - pokeys, and S.subsinipes centipedes included. It's a complete and unrelenting beast, sending a flurry of hair into the air before...
Hiya, you lovely people.....
Received an AF king baboon the other day and what a stunning animal.
She's housed in a 24x18x18" lockable blanket box with about 8" of compacted substrate (coco coir / Spider Life burrowing substrate in a roughly 50:50 mix). There's a starter burrow beneath a...
If you're going to handle him for the first time can I suggest you sit on the floor with the enclosure in front of you - even a small fall can be fatal to a T. (This is especially true if you're at all unsure - if the T decides to scarper it'll only fall a short distance).
Also, if it does do...
Just a quick update:
A rough timetable of events:
23 May Mated. Female ate male.
26 May Took medium field cricket
29 May Took adult female field cricket which was heavy with eggs
29 May Created egg sack overnight
12 June Light spraying to moisten substrate
20 June Light spraying to...
Honest answer is I don't know first hand.
I've used them in the past to help combat an outbreak in a P.imperator enclosure shortly after she had a clutch of young (I didn't want to physically disturb her by performing a complete tank overhaul). The supplier I used claimed they're fine to use...
Gonads of steel and pants with a reinforced gusset!
For me the fear is that my OBT would do one of its turbo-dashes and I'd panic and do something stupid to startle it.
Lovely to see them out and about.
Do a search for Hypoapsis mites which can be bought online. These are predatory mites that will love munching their way through your spider mites.
No noxious chemicals (always a plus) and when the infestation dies down, so will the predators. They won't pose any threat to any of your animals.
Pretty much what everyone said....
From my experience Rosies like it bone dry - you'll probably find it will spend most of its time on the rock or sides of the enclosure if the substrate is damp.
I think 80F+ is a bit high - I keep mine at around the 75F mark. Temps drop quite...
Hello you Lovely People....
I acquired 3 x P.cancerides slings (approx 2cm) last June and they became instant favourites. All were feeding and growing well up until Feb this year, when each animal reached the 4"(-ish) mark.
All three sealed the entrance to their burrows, as they've done...
