There's just something about the skittering sound roaches make when they run around. Going to school downtown in a somewhat large city, roaches were not your friends...
Poor guy. Wonder if the others attacked him or...? I wouldn't think he'd need anything special as far as set-up. Might need maimed or killed feeders longer than the rest, though, until he heals.

But also I would agree with there possibly being too much ventilation. Possibly cover some of the vents with saran wrap.

Some say it will bother them. Some say they get used to it. I have two very young kids and that's a lot of noise. My Ts hid at first but seem to be used to it now (slings and adults). Only one is skittish and crazy, but that's just her.

The only time I use "circulated air" is to get my avicularia slings away from the entrance to their enclosures so I can do maintenance without jail breaks. :)
The pros and cons of these and other substrates have been debated many times. It's really a matter of preference. Look up "peat moss", "substrate", etc in the search box to find many useful threads.
What is meant by ventilation is to have small holes or screen ports in your enclosure so that air can circulate. Do not use fans etc near your tarantulas. The vibrations will upset them as will the air being blown at them.
