Comment by 'splangy' in media 'Some Sort Of Aphonopelma??'

that's the thing. it wasn't wild caught. it was captive bred (or so they said). i've looked through every imaginable picture i could find of anything in the genus aphonopelma and none of them have anything remotely similar to that black stripe on the carapace. that stripe is unique, so i...

    Some Sort Of Aphonopelma??

I just got this beauty, but I'm lost. The kid that sold her to me said she was a Haplopelma anax... She's obviously not a Haplopelma anything... She doesn't look like A. anax to me either because of that beautiful black stripe down her carapace...

For the love of spiders why won't she molt?!?!

Definitely not pregnant!! Saw a foot in the air today, and now she's back down on her belly, and there appears to be some extra orange in there with her. so i'm 99% sure she molted, but it's a little hard to see anything since she's so heavily webbed.

    Breeding in the wild

Definitely something you need to put on here when you have it! Classifying little things like spiders and insects is really difficult because they don't look the same the way that larger animals tend to (at least not from our perspective). I think that's part of the reason that we have so much...

    Breeding in the wild

they're different phenotypically, sure. That doesn't necessarily mean they're actually different. For example, all dogs are all the same species. But there are a ton of different breeds. Phenotypically they're all totally different. I can't say for sure, but I would hazard a guess that...

    Breeding in the wild

Humans and chimpanzees share about 95-99.9% of the genome. the question of whether or not humans and chimps could mate was obviously rhetorical. The point is that despite the fact that we are almost identical in a genetic sense, we have no possibility to mate. Animals are categorized into the...

    Breeding in the wild

I'm a she, and idk... i have ancestors who were sheepherders, and if my gramma is to be believed, the stories are true. :) i'm not sure how my original post was insulting to anyone unless you are a sheepherder or have otherwise engaged in relations with animals. If that's the case, i...

    Breeding in the wild

This probably blends with the comment above that species are man-made names, but I maintain my point is different. My speculation would be that hybridization occurs between specimens that are not separate species but sub species, or even just different color forms. As we develop the taxonomy...

For the love of spiders why won't she molt?!?!

nah... i'm actually getting kind of excited! it's just an issue of how time consuming it will be to take care of them until i can sell them off to someone. :) but alas, my hopes are getting up, and there's probably no cause for that....

    Breeding in the wild

This is the equivalent of asking whether humans and chimpanzees would mate in the wild. even if they did do the deed (i've heard stories about sheep herders...), there's no possibility for offspring. genetically, and physically, things are too different. we're more closely related to...
