Question for anyone thats raised a G. pulchra from a sling....
I had a G. pulchra moult and turn from the tannish sling color.. to the normal black adult colors.. pretty cool i thought, its finally looking like an adult, THEN.. it moulted again, got bigger, and went back to its tan sling...
The largest spiders ive found in Illinois are barn spiders, you can usually find them on bridges that go over rivers, they are orb weavers and can get to about 2 inches.
I think my P. scrofa takes the cake...
Its about .5 inches and has not moulted since i bought it in July of 2005, Its not starved at all, has a nice plump abdomen.
Im going to try feeding this thing again and hope it goes into premoult soon, but it looks as if its about to explode already
if you want a fast, crazy, scary, hissing, venom dripping animal... you should look elsewhere.. even the most aggresive tarantulas are mild mannered creatures most of the time.
maybe you should get a black mamba
P. cancerides?
I hear mixed reports about these.. mine is about 3 inches and its definitely not docile.. but i cant say its a nightmare either. Its probably the most "entertaining" spider i have.
P. cancerides are great spiders... mine is very active, they get defensive if cornered, but prefer to run away. Get one as a sling.. theyre cheaper, and a cool blue color.
yah, make sure it has access to water, ive noticed that my spiders are more reluctant to eat if they arent well hydrated.
for the spiderlings, id get a spray bottle or mister and spray the sides of the container.. it will probably climb the sides and drink the water droplets
i usually touch the front legs with a paintbrush, a defensive T will immediately go into a threat pose (my P. cancerides and B. vagans are quick to threaten) and the more docile ones will usually just walk away from the brush (G. pulchra, avic just walk away)
Im there every time.. i usually go straight to Botar's, and Bill and Bruce's (Theraphosid Breeding Project) tables, and kind of skim over the rest of the show.
This sunday it conflicts with a gun show in Lakemoor... so its going to be a struggle to make it to both.
id go with a curly hair (Brachypelma albopilosum), a chaco golden knee (Grammostola aureostriata), or a Brazilian Black (Grammostola pulchra).
they are all docile and eat like pigs.. the Grammostola are fairly slow growing though. Curly Hairs are cheap ($5 for a spiderling), sort of quick...
my advice is to do a search and look at all the "sex me" threads, you can read an article on how to do it, but it will be easier to learn if you page through the "sex me" posts and compare your guesses to others....
remember that some tarantulas are easier to sex than others
Id have to go with my 2" P. cancerides.. always shuffling the substrate, climbing the sides of the tupperware, giving me full threat displays even though he is pint sized (how cute).. and of course every time i let this guy out, he poops.
right now hes webbing up this giant ball of...
until someone imports a decent number of new spiders from new bloodlines, then successfully breeds enough of them to match the demand... the price will stay high (im thinking years..)
im curious as to their pricing in europe??.. im sure that can be used as a reference if we do get more...
my mother thinks im weird
my father seems to like watching them eat
2 of my friends have taken some of my baby L. parahybanas
i dont tell girls i have pet spiders
my roomates are scared of them
