hungry versis
I've got two versis that I've raised from about 10mm legspan to about 50mm now. Both of them stopped actively hunting a couple of molts ago and now stay in or on top of their tents most of the time.
Whenever they are hungry, they sit just poking out of one the doorways to their...
poundland classix
I saw those sweetie jars in poundland(the greatest resource for english T keepers) But I went for the large jars of pickles cos they had clearer glass, and it's easier to fit loads of em on a heatmat.
is big_loader a squarepusher reference per chance sir?
My A. avic has been in an 8 gallon tank since he was about 2 1/2- 3" legspan, and he is fine. When he gets a bit bigger he's going in an even bigger tank.
Also, its not strictly necessary for an arboreal tank to be taller than it is wide, as long as it is tall enough to have lots of branches...
All my slings (40-50mm Avic. versicolors, 10-15mm Avic metallica and Avic. sp.) have been kept about 70-80F during the day and as low as 66F at night. They are all feeding and moulting well. Maybe its okay to raise slings like this, but an adult who's been raised at a constant 80F might find it...
I saw my curly having a wash in his water dish after a molt. he was dipping his palps in the water and washing himself down and taking sips of the water, it was very cool to witness.
The fan in my Avic tank has blue LEDs on it, which obviously dim down when you turn down the voltage. Looks pretty cool, a bit like moonlight. It was only about 7 quid from Maplin.
I use a pc fan inside my large avic tank, to help with circulation and to stop condensation. He likes to come and sit in the breeze, but doesn't go near it.(they're not as stupid as we think)
If you use a wall-wart type adjustable transformer you can run the fan at 3 or 6v instead of the usual...
I recently had a DOA Tap.gigas sling. When I got the replacement sling, it was very skinny but it tried pouncing on a cricket within a couple of hours so I thought it would be okay, the next day it was dead. I'd kept it in the same conditions as my avics.
I didn't bother asking for another...
I use John Innes seedling compost with a little sharp sand added. One of my versi slings has started camouflaging his tent with bits of compost.
I also keep a basil leaf in all my enclosures near the spiders' tents, for the crix/lox to nibble on, it also makes the tanks smell nice and has...
Don't bother with a petshop dial-hygro-piece-of-crap. I got an exo terro gauge and it has never been even remotely close to the real humidity.
If you have to measure RH, get a digi hygro (or decent analogue dial) online, but not a petstore hygro. (ripoff)
Industrial suppliers are good, also...
Are you using a heatmat under the tank?
My sling jars are standing on a heatmat, and one of my versis (interestingly the fastest growing one of them) keeps extending his web down to floor. I got a new avic. sp. sling yesterday and he's built a web near the floor of his jar too.
Maybe its cos...
My two versis are nosey, rather than keen to escape. If you open the lid they come to the top and wander round the rim, but they don't make a run for it.
I'm sure I read somewhere that only liquid and tiny particles can pass thru the setae covering a Ts mouth, so I don't think it could ingest a live parasite.
Also I would have thought that the eggs of a wormlike parasite would be layed by a fly of some kind, not the worm.
just some recent...
cheers chaps, yeah I'm starting to thiink it was my over-active imagination.
What are the chances of a moth thats only been hatched 2 or 3 days having a large worm parasite inside 'em? Not high methinks... and if there was, why would it be coming out of a moth, before it's been bitten by a T...
Typical! I just posted a thread about how cool moths are and now I've got one with a worm in it! :8o
A while ago I noticed some tiny caterpillar/worm things crawling around one of A.versi sling jars. The jar had just been cleaned, but when I changed the substrate I forgot to mix the fresh...
