Advice for keeping my first sling. (C.Versicolor)

Scavenge feeding is fine. I've done it occasionally for years if I don't have suitably sized prey for small slings, and I've yet to find an individual who didn't recognize it as a food source. Tarantulas are clearly capable of sensing a food source beyond touch alone. I've also run into the...

    T species: biggest surprises/disappointments

Not who you asked, but in my experience, Pterinochilus, N. incei, and many of my Avicularia-types have all been pretty impressive webbers. Ah, the supreme gatekeeper of arachnoboards has revealed himself. Thanks for reminding me why I rarely peruse this forum. Look at how old my account is...

    T species: biggest surprises/disappointments

I’m interested in hearing stories from everyone else on species they were pleasantly surprised by or disappointed in once they got their hands on them. For me, biggest surprises have to be Pseudoclamoris gigas and GBB. I’ve never been interested in any of the formerly known as Tappies. They...

    Poecilotheria metallica doesn't hide

I’ve only had a pokie threat pose once, and it was a big P. ornata shortly after breeding her. How often are people getting threat poses from their pokies?

Help! I think a tarantula is loose in my house

I’d bet a dollar or two someone is messing with you. A molt would never end up in that location naturally.

Which is better Brachypelma Vagans or Aphonopelma chalcodes ?

There is no “better” when comparing one species of tarantula to another. But the answer is B. vagans.

I touched my inch long sling with a small soft paintbrush, and lots of utriculating hair came out?

Urticating hairs fall out incredibly easily. If you look closely, you can often see some that aren’t even fully attached anymore, they’re just caught on other hairs.

    Poecilotheria metallica doesn't hide

I currently have or have owned almost every pokie species in the hobby, and P. metallica seem to be much more high strung than the others. The light sensitivity seems to be typical for them. Mine will sit out in the open, but any sign of light or movement and they’re racing around the enclosure...

Review by 'jayefbe' on item 'Joe Rossi'

Joe was willing to meet up, which was much appreciated, and he was very gracious despite me showing up late due to some severe traffic (thanks poppies!). He had great communication the entire time. If anything, the slings were bigger than advertised and are in great condition. He even threw in a...

    Is our hobby in decline.

Who said I was complaining? I was simply making an observation. Why is that so offensive to you? The noob questions existed back then too. It just wasn’t *only* noob questions. To be clear, I have no problem with noob questions. It just doesn’t feel like this is the avenue for serious T-keeping...

    Is our hobby in decline.

I’m in the same boat as you. Kept Ts for years and then stopped ~3 years ago. A move and career change meant caring for a hundred Ts just wasn’t feasible anymore. Now I’m getting back into the hobby and am noticing some changes. Overall, this forum feels less active. The majority of active...

    Missing moult?

It’s not uncommon to not be able to find an old molt, especially when they’re smaller and they are destroyed more easily. Some Ts will chew them up or bury them or hide them and you’ll just find a stray leg here and there.

Good first arboreal for a new keeper?

Why? I’ve never had a GBB, but the rep is they’re quite flighty and speedy. In contrast, Avic types have always been very laid back in my experience. For the OP, yet another suggestion for avic types. They’re awesome. They make a great first time T in my opinion. Slings can have a rep for...

    Chilobrachys genus questions

Anyone who hasn’t had a T die, hasn’t had a single problem, hasn’t had much experience with tarantulas. Issues will come up even under perfect conditions.

My Poecilotheria metallica sling is dying - barely moves

As others have said, way too wet, way too little ventilation. Also, that definitely looks like mold growth to me.

    Patchy and discolored abdomen?

Not in pre-molt. Just patchy from kicking hairs.

New to keeping T's, help finding the right species?

OW tarantula bites are MUCH worse than their NW counterparts. They cause severe muscle cramping which can last for days or even weeks. There's a pretty famous video on youtube from tarantulaguy1976 that got tagged by a Poecilotheria ornata. He's a big guy, and he's clearly in immense pain.

ATTN: Poecilotheria owner, breeder or dealer.

According to this https://tomsbigspiders.com/2018/08/10/the-u-s-fish-and-wildlife-service-ruling-on-sri-lankan-poecilotheria-species/ it is still legal to ship Sri Lankan Poecilotheria across state lines as long as no money is exchanging hands. We should set up a breeding program, where...

New to keeping T's, help finding the right species?

I'm like you. I'm not a fan of the itchy hairs, and would personally prefer fast and defensive to a constant hair kicker. That said, a lot of the OW species are VERY fast. IMO, after having kept way too many tarantula species to keep track of, they're all fairly hardy. The biggest difference...

R.I.P Male P ornata, lost control of limbs then bitt the ground.

So it survives to 5" but now it's bad genes? That's a new one.
