I really can't see the problem with keeping animals on their natural substrate. I have kept both lizards and snakes on sand and peat and bark respectively, none have died. One of my closest friends has a reptile zoo and keeps her animals on whatever they live on in the wild, not a single trace...

I have 2 b. albo and 1 b. auratum slings/juveniles and they all live underground. Mine push their molts into corners in the far end of their burrows, so there's no way for me to use them. Gotta love those lil home decorators!
I wouldn't say that they always leave a hole when they burrow, though. One of my B. Albo slings burrowed and plugged the hole pretty damn good. I thought I had an escape aswell so i poked the substrate and BOOM up came the sling and scared me half to death. :)
