Where do you live? I know that you might be able to catch some chinese mantids in the summer and then breed them, releasing those you do not want back outside. They get fairly large as mantids go.

Yeah, some are, but none can kill an adult uneless they are extremely alergic to the venom and have an aniphilactic reaction.

Maybe they are a herbivorous species, try putting different types of leaves in there. Some ant species also live off fungus which they grow. Pherhaps you could contact a local specialist and inquire about what they eat(as long as they are legal to keep)
