    2010 Missouri Bug Hunt

Well this year wasn't as good as previous years. The ground was dry and the grass was thick and tall. The 2nd and 3rd week of May are the best times to be there. We sure didn't see the number of Ts and scorps that we normally do, not to mention snakes, moths, frogs, etc. Great...

    King Baboon

I kept my King Baboon in a large rectangular opaque Rubbermade style container. They will quickly make a burrow - help it out by starting the burrow for it. They will make long deep burrows - very interesting to watch the digging they do. Great species - mean and slow growing though.

What do you feed your crickets?

I agree. Lobster roaches FTW! Gel cubes and Meow Mix for my roaches with the occasional piece of spoiled fruit. $10 per year to keep the roaches going.

    How many of you...?

Some species grow quite slow. If you want to breed a species, you'll usually want quite a few individuals and getting a few sub-adult or adult specimens helps you get going that much faster. Also, you can often times buy sub-adults from individuals for not much more than you'd pay a dealer...

Spider who like to be touch?

The above 2 posters are right - Avics will turn their bum towards an aggressor. My purpurea and versicolors did this as well.

Tools or Tricks of the Trade?

I'm sick of getting "haired" and it's been much worse in the last year or so I use forceps for almost everything so I can avoid hairs as much as possible. I also keep a long sleeve shirt next to my collection that I throw on while working with them - again to avoid getting hairs on my...

    Darkness in T room

As long as that room gets some ambient light coming from the other rooms, I think you're fine. They don't need much light to know whether it's day/night. I've done alot of T hunting in Missouri and Kansas. All of the Ts are under rocks and in burrows. They would be able to see some light...

    Darkness in T room

I'd say leave the door to that room open all of the time. The ambient light from other rooms would be enough to keep them on a day/night cycle. I keep mine in my computer room closet. The computer has windows, but I often keep the door to the closet shut 24/7 or mostly closed. Mine are...

    agressive tarantulas

generally speaking - the baboon spiders are just nasty. P. cancerides have bad attitudes as well. pokies aren't as bad as they're made out to be. most of them want to run away first and only get attitude if you mess with them long enough. on a side note - I did have a MM A...

    L. parahybana. no way that's a vagans. a vagans that size would be adult and have plenty of red to show off.

    Wild-caught Tarantula Experiences?

WC Ts don't need any more room than captive bred individuals. The WC versions aren't "thinking" any different. Generally speaking, splittingtanks is a bad idea - too often you end up with something making lunch out of something else. As TL said - sometimes WC specimens will have a...

    Wild-caught Tarantula Experiences?

Drachen is right, that first 1 appears to be a mature male and it won't live long. Best bet is to find a female to pair him with or turn him loose in an area you know has tarantulas. a 10 gallon would be more than enough room for 1 of them. You can't keep more than 1 spider per enclosure...

Cage ok for a large centipede???

Yeah those are great for pedes. I love those containers because you can manage the ventilation so easily depending on the # of holes you add. I have several spiders in them.

    One gallon screw-top jars?

I keep all my pedes in those. I like them because I can fine tune the amount of ventilation they get. Haven't had any problems yet.

    B boehmei Sling Question

I have 4 B. boehmei slings all about 1/4". I keep them in small containers like that with about 10 toothpick sized holes. I use peat moss for substrate and mist 1 side of the substrate about once a week or so. They are actually pretty tough to kill, even as slings. You can let the...

    New guy needs help

I vote for a green bottle blue as well - they are great eaters, nearly impossible to kill, grow quickly and have amazing colors.

    Caney Mountain in southern Missouri

I took my wife and stepson down to Caney Mntn to camp on Saturday night, 9-23-06 and that afternoon BrianS decided to come down for a while as well. We all went up to a glade for a couple of hours, here are some pics from that afternoon. First off, last April I had an ultimate male A...

How do you take pictures of aggresive spiders?

Sarah, in my yard, it really wouldn't have a chance. My GBB went on a sprint across the yard further than any other T has so far. The grass gives way underneath them. If they have a hard surface to move on they can move very quickly, but when their footing constantly bends and moves around...

How do you take pictures of aggresive spiders?

They don't have a chance. I keep them about 10 feet from trees, bushes, etc. I can easily put a deli cup over them and the grass slows them down. The grass almost acts as a quicksand for them, they almost "swim" through it. My backyard has particulary thick grass and it's a lot of work for...
