The caterpillar and cacoon are from a silkworm moth, saturniidae (and I don't know of any hornless sphinx moths that spin a silken cacoon like that). It must have escaped, since I'm pretty sure you would have noticed the wings as remains. It seems small for most saturniids, though, but the...
Oooo, I haven't seen one of those that was that big with both green and tan since Japan 12 years ago. Need to go looking around for the Chinese mantids around here. Nice find!
Eh, from what I've seen, there are two kinds of "blacklights." True flourescent UV lights, and then the tinted filliment bulbs for terrariums and posters. You want the flourescent kind that makes white glow, attracts moths, and gives you a tan. :D
If you can find a number of swallowtail caterpillars, put them on sticks with different textures, from smooth to very rough, of varying colors. The shade of the chrysalis will vary from bright green to brownish-black, the rougher the surface gets, regardless of the color. lol
The reason you...
Western tiger swallowtail. Cateripllars come in greens and browns, with a few odd yellowish or pinkish varieties. Butterflies are big, yellow, black-striped, and long tails. Put it in a jar with a stick in it, and it will pupate. Keep it out in a garage by a window for the winter, and bring...

Polyphemus moth, Antheraea polyphemus, assuming there isn't a very closely related species as with Cecropia and regal moths. When did you photograph it?
Here's a website...

Probably my favorite arachnid, mostly because they really creeped me out when I first saw them in the lab. If I remember correctly, typically cave and bark dwellers. I was actually going to post if anyone had any experience or first-hand knowledge of them. No clue how long they live (this...
Boxy, the top one is an adult antlion.
Spider, giant lacewings are about 1.5 inches long, so about the same dimensions and coloration as an antlion, only much more robust.
Oooo! Oooo! Oooo! (Waves hand wildly in air) I know this one! I know this one!...
Io Moth, Family Saturniidae (giant silkworm moths), Sp. Automeris io. Spines cause a painful sting if they penetrate human skin, feeds on a variety of deciduous trees, most notably wild cherry...
LOL! That pic is begging for a caption contest...
"Yo! FOOL! You think you can take me? Pullin' a knife on me?!!!!"
I've always enjoyed turning over rocks and logs, even when I do surprise the occasional rattle snake, and seeing the little pseudoscorpions crawling about like little...
