I always microwave my substrate to kill all possible pests and fungal spores of course that only takes care of the substrate not the outside environment.
From what I understand is the dark phase is the sign of a very mature female P. metallica. I received this adult in a trade when it was bought to me she had just shed. The shed was at the bottom of the terrarium yet I haven't seen her till after the trade. The shed was blue yet when I finally...
try using a dull clear coat paint to spray on it that should help stop the urticating hairs from coming off so easily. Also helps preserve the shed a bit better. You can find dull clear coat in spray cans in the hobby department by the model paints. Make sure it is the dull coat unless you like...
he looks very plump so he can survive till he sheds as long as there is fresh water to drink. Slings also need it a little bit more humid then their adult versions because they do not have the waxy coating to maintain their moisture as the adults do.
I suggest B. vagan or one of the many beginners species till you get some experience under your belt. Once you have experience try a arboreal species they are a little more active especially when they get loose during feeding then you will have more activity then you want. lol
I suggest to raise the humidy just a bit to ensure proper shedding and leave no live food items in the cage because crickets will eat off of a tarantula during a shed. They are quite helpless during the shed process.
I had a B. smithi go a year with out eating but she was a adult as long as there is fresh water she was good. Slings though that is different was there dead crickets or other prey items sling scavange dead prey items. I use D. melagasters that I breed for all my slings you can buy kits for them...
Did you use any special cleaners on the cage. Use only common dish liquid when cleaning it is very mild and rinse with hot water several times. Dehydration could be it quarantine him if you have other species.
A hide will do wonders for the spider it will have a place to hide when you open the lid. Try using the tall deli cups or even a tall jar with a piece of flat wood and maybe a plastic plant for it to make a hide and feel more secure.
This is very good information and rule of thumb to remember and follow. Especially since sling do not have the waxy coating to hold in the moisture that the larger ones do. With arboreals they need to eat constantly it seem they have a higher metabolic rate then terrestrial.
There are species of tarantula who do fish RobC has a video of one catching fish I believe but not sure that it was H. gigas. Check out the video it is very well done.
Does she have access to clean drinking water sometimes they get dehydrated and their legs starts to curl in. With exo skeletons they basically run on hydraulics. So they must always have access to clean water.
They like to build their home up high perhaps if you lean some sticks against the back wall of the enclosure for her to secure her web to it might help. I used hanging artificial plant with a suction cup on it in the back up high and they built off that.
If it looks fine externally the only time will tell if there is any internal damage. Make sure there's clean water and check the next day. Then perhaps offer food and observe her response whether she is able to capture food or not to see if she even has a appetite or not. Observe her movements...
I read somewhere the spores enter the book lungs and start to grow since the lung are dark and moist.Making the lungs vulnerable to fungal growth. Since Some fungi have the ability to produce toxic mytotoxins.
