People keep these and other species, such as lesser mealworms, in feeder bins in order to help keep colonies clean and healthy. It is perfectly normal. You've very quickly gone from someone who didn't know jack about these to an expert. Flukers is not a bad company, the reason they are giving...
It almost makes me wonder if flukers counts the crickets by weight and just happened to be at the bottom of a bin.
Either way, contact flukers, I am sure they will make it right. Also, next time order from http://joshfrogs.com. His prices are better and his crickets come with a 72 hour...
I've seen several people suggesting flexwatt, if you go this route you MUST use some kind of temperature control. Flex-watt gets VERY hot. A rheostat doesn't cut it in my opinion, because ambient temperature holds so much influence over a set up like that. You should get a thermostat of some...
Do you find that increases the temperature in the viv's? I'm in the Tennessee area, but a glass tank by a window that is covered can easily reach an internal temp of 100° F. What is the longest one of them has been going?
Sorry for all the questions, I really like the designs and would like to...
Joe, how are you providing light to the plants? IME even so called "low light" plants will do poorly in a vivarium situation without some supplemental light.
Thanks! I wish I had better glass for my camera, but I keep buying tarantulas instead!
Thanks!
These are all on the small side right now, the H. albo. is 3", the P. subfusca is 4" and the P. rufilata is 5". As soon as they get big enough I will try my best though!
She is beautiful...
By an inch long do you mean the prosoma and opisthosoma or the diagonal legspan? I generally start keeping their substrate fairly dry after they are big enough to offer a water dish (water bottle caps work great for this).
Crush their heads before you toss them in, the won't burrow but will twitch for a long time.
Faster roach species: B. lateralis and B. fusca/fusca hybrids (these will also burrow but are much more flighty and run around more.)
FYI if you are wanting to sterilize moss you can soak it in a 2-4% bleach solution for 15-20 minuets then immediately rinse. Repeat the rinse until you no longer smell bleach on the moss. Air dry for a few day (or let it grow in your empty tank for a week or two) before adding your pets. This...
Treat it like a fish for maximum enjoyment and for the health of the tarantula.
Added by Edit:
BTW a bit of searching would've turned up numerous threads on the pros/cons of handling and how people go about handling more defensive/spazzy species. Further, this is your first tarantula, you...
I wouldn't, especially until you get more experience. Tarantulas are unpredictable and get nothing from being handled. You are better off just observing.
Coco Husk:
Coco Fiber:
Be careful when using trade names as often they mean totally different things, coco husk is often used as a filtration or base layer in false bottom tanks.
I had an H. lividum take nearly 4 weeks to settle in and burrow and start eating.
