    Centipede Enclosure

Looks great! That's almost zoo-quality. I'll probably ask YOUR advice when my wife decides I can keep scolo's! ;-)

'Pedeling feeding frequency and general methabolic rate

It's an interesting question. I read somewhere that some scorpions can survive on just four crickets a year. AFAIK Pedes as a general rule are more energetic and alert than scorps, which would indicate a faster metabolism.

    Sweet little garden pede

Yeah, I too observed they were communal! Put two in the enclosure expecting the larger to eat the smaller. Instead, they essentially ignored each other - even during incidental contact. Most of things here in Rain Land this time of year are gooey all over (slugs, earthworms, grubs). What...

    Sweet little garden pede

Greetings Mr. Pede wrangler! :) Thanks for the advice. Problem solved. The pede always hides under that clump of moss. It's just a matter of removing that to a temorary location like a mixing bowl which was done. The enclosure was stinking, similar to a dead animal on the side of the road...

    Sweet little garden pede

Thanks for the tip. They are "cute" in their own way (my wife would disagree sharply ;) ) I'll try a small paintbrush. One of my mistakes, possibly, was including gravel mixed in with the soil. I want to move on to the big Scolos eventually, and then can post some really impressive...

    Missouri millipedes

Great photos! If I may ask, what type of camera/exposure settings did you use?

    Poison claws visible here.

    Sweet little garden pede

Okay, I don't really think pedes are "sweet", and this isn't something rare or exotic like many here have showcased, but I hope you enjoy the photos anyway. These specimen was collected under a board. The one in the close-up has since been released. Immediate goal is to keep this little guy...

    Archispirostreptus Giga

Staining from millis FWIW Give your milli a brief (15-20 second) lukewarm bath in a bathroom sink under running water, with drain open. This simluates a heavy downpour from their tropical home. I did this with my milli when I got her, to wash off some of the mites. She exuded a good deal of...

    Giant Centipede Handling

What a sweet little pede! :D How much warning do you get if they are about to attack - assuming the pede has been safely extracted from its quarters and is crawling around on you? Showed a friend your videos today of the black pede (Smith?) eating the mouse. Very impressive, esp. how...

    Giant Centipede Handling

Colors One thing about these animals is they are beautiful - in the sense that a precious stone is beautiful. Every color of the rainbow is represented somewhere in some suspecies - reds, browns, blues, yellows, oranges, and I've even seen peach with green legs. Despite my healthy respect...

    Giant Centipede Handling

Caco, Wanted to chime in here. I've always had a healthy respect for these reclusive creatures. The first time I ever saw one in real life was a 3" lithobiidae ssp. seen while cleaning construction debris. I was 14. It ran out of the wood pile. Provoked by my cousin kicking at it, it...

New pet: Chilopoda Lithobiomorpha (temperate species need love too)

That's what I think killed it. Oh well... I'll make a little trip out to some rotting wood and try to find another one and hopefully have better luck next time. Thanks all for your help :)

New pet: Chilopoda Lithobiomorpha (temperate species need love too)

He died while I was posting this :( Theories: * Had a small spider in the cage, as a portential prey item. Had seen them fight yesterday (and yes, I have a movie of it)... could the little spider have prevailed? He was at the bottom of the cage... * Had Saran wrap with holes punched to...

New pet: Chilopoda Lithobiomorpha (temperate species need love too)

This is a specimen I found while cleaning up dead leaves in a recessed entry to our basement. It is a 1" chilopoda lithobiomorpha - a species indigenous to the Pacific Northwest. These are the small temperate cousins to the much-celebrated Scolopendra sp. Committed hobbiests will...

I want to know alittle more...

Millis Millis are easy to keep, docile, and make no noise or odor. Google "African Giant Blacks". These are the largest at 10" or more and the best species for beginners. Good luck.

    Spiders copulating

You're right. Also, I didn't know until now exactly what a Hobo looked like. Thanks! BTW, the little is still (as of 20 minutes ago)... attached. Thinking I may collect it as it looks quite interesting. Not too keen on catching Hobos for food though ;)

    Spiders copulating

Actually, I'm not sure if they are copulating after all. The female does not respond when blown on or when a leg is touched. She's kind of hanging on the wall as if attached by webbing... The smaller spider does respond to stimuli.
