OR you could try cornstarch. I used this on my B. Emilia after an accident involving the cat. That was 2 months ago and she'd still doing fine. That clots right away.
Best bet is to wait for a molt - it will be on the inside of the abdomen. There are many sexing threads on the boards. Do a search and you'll see many great close-up shots of what to look for. If you have the Tarantula Keeper's Guide, see page 51. If you don't, it's a must have!
Actually you know what? Ginger is a MALE, but I name all my T's when I get them as spiderlings and by the time I find out what gender they are they already have an "identity" to me! You'd sex these just like any other T - look for a flap and if you don't see one you probably have another male...
This is the little devil who has caused me much heartache since he's lived with us. He killed his brother, my B. Angustum juvie, last month by knocking the kritter keeper off the shelf. The spider shelf has since been moved to a room Toby has no access to (but he still finds ways to get in...
My Brachys
This is my prized B. Emilia - see the white on her leg? That is dried cornstarch from the beginning of December when we had an accident involving the cat. She seems to be healing well.
Vitalius/Pamphobeteus Platyomma - freshly molted!
Hi guys,
This is the first pic I've posted so I hope it works. I wanted to share some pics of my female Platyomma. She molted 2 days ago. Hope you enjoy - isn't she pretty?
When you're slings get a little bigger, try using those black film containers - you know the ones that come with the gray lids? Sometimes they use them as hides and they look pretty cool. You can also use the gray lid as a shallow water dish - it dries out quickly but you don't have to worry...
Mine is very slow as well. It's driving me CRAZY as I wasn't able to sex it with the last molt. I acquired him/her at 3/4" and below is the molt history:
1/12/04
2/09/04
3/23/04
5/23/04
and it has been 7+ months and NOTHING!!! I hear I'm in for the same thing with the A. Chalcodes I just...
I would definitely recommend G. Pulchra - you can't go wrong there! Can I also suggest B. Emilia? My very favorite T is a B. Emilia female and she is beautiful, sweet, and never flicked hairs at me. The hair-flicking thing isn't so bad though, no need to wear goggles. Just make sure to wash...
Hamfoto - I just lost my B. Angustum female. :( She was my third favorite tarantula. I will be getting another B. Angustum for Christmas. I love this species! Mine wasn't too skittish though she did occasionally flick hairs - nowhere near as much as my B. Smithi however! One thing I can...
Steelweb - do you have the Tarantula Keeper's Guide??? See pages 161-162. I think what you are describing if referred to as a hernia, apparently common in B. Albopilosum. I don't have one of this species so I can't give you any firsthand knowledge. Best of luck to you.
