I got rid of all of my Androctonus, Parabuthus, and Scolopendra when I found out I had a little one on the way. I applaud your decision. It is the right one. It's just not worth the risk.
This is another great species, I had a female around the same time in 2000. They are imo the best looking of the Augacephalus. The orange fringe that develops on their legs as they mature makes them stand out. They are fairly docile as well. Nice buy, I wish I still had mine.
I'm not sure if they would effect the birds. I never had any issues with my inverts, they may or may not be irritated by the predatory mites presence. They do the job of eradication well, and when the food source runs out they die off.
Order a culture of predatory mites. They will eradicate the pest mites quickly. Do a search for Stratiolaelaps scimitus formerly known as Hypoaspis miles. I have used them several times over the years with great effect.
Just say you have chemical sensitivities, and bring up anaphylaxis type symptoms upon inhalation. They will probably want to avoid the potential for a lawsuit. When I lived in an apartment, I refused entry with that exact reason. They listened, however I still put my collection in double bagged...
This is so true, I am so sick sick of seeing idiots spraying toxic chemicals everywhere! It is all in the vain of aesthetics mostly, (' I have a great weed and bug free lawn, but my family is exposed to carcinogenic chemicals'). The funny part is people actually believe the chem companies when...
She died of apparent old age, I bought her when she was about 6". I have seen the dripping venom from these as well. She would advance toward the threat when her enclosure was opened, very pugnacious species! She was one of my favorite spiders back then.
I had to sell off all of my...
I kept this sp. years ago. "Devil's pet" is a good name for them. They are the equivalent to a new world H. minax. The threat display is very similar, mine used to flip on her back fangs bared, and she would stay like that for an hour sometimes when disturbed. They are probably the most...
Never had a problem with the lids with any of them, I just make sure they are retreated. I like them for security reasons, don't need S. cal's, H.mac's, and Poecilotheria running about.
Mine make use of cork bark and web it up, incorporated w/ dirt as Bob as said.
The maculata slings are...
I have always kept my H. maculata's in clear plastic gallon jars with the screw on lids. They get a hide set up, and when you maintenance them they bolt into their hides. I have never had a problem with them running out on me *knock on wood*. I just had one of my females produce 160 slings in...
I am also afflicted with this condition (dyshidrotic eczema). Thankfully it is only confined to my hands.Very aggravating to say the least. Try to reduce stress and aggravation and modify your diet, it seems to help. I have not used the steroid cream in a long time, I think it contributes to the...
Yeah man, it gets to be brutal! I could not even go into the room without getting itchy!
You are right about certain species being worse than others. Nhandu, Acanthoscurria, Theraphosa, Pamphobeteus, and some Brachypelma, are the worst for me.
You could try an antihistamine like benadryl, and or a hydrocortisone cream. Unfortunately urticating hairs seem to get worse and worse after repeated exposure. I had to give up all of my urticating species because after 10 yrs of keeping it got to be to annoying.
