Nile monitor lizards are being caught in my town

Well, I read the local paper today (Big Spring herald http://www.bigspringherald.com/content/view/188028/60/ )and apparently the Nile monitor crisis was a hoax. There was a report of a large lizard that was caught but nothing as large as a Nile monitor. I guess everyone who had their bags...

Nile monitor lizards are being caught in my town

there was an article of Nile monitor lizards being caught in my town. There have been 8 smaller ones and yesterday a 3 ft. female was caught. A local zoo was contacted and the animal was identified by their reptile specialist. I'm assuming that this was someone's pet that grew too large are...

    Black Trapdoor caught in VA...

I was in my back yard a little bit ago and caught an adult mature male (he's packing some pretty big bulbs on his pedipalps) about 1 1/2"-2" size. Granted I'm here in Texas, I really thought is was a small aphonopelma sp. out moving around. This one appears to have the same tibial depression...

New arachnids found in Mekong Delta region

I saw a report on CNN where there were slots of new species discovered recently around Vietnam and the Mekong Delta region. One of the pics caught my eye, Storenomorpha anne. I've tried tracking down the taxonomy of this sp. to determine if it falls in the Theraphosidae family or not. Does...

    Uninformed news people

My local paper (Big Spring Herald)wrote up an article about this in todays' paper talking really bad about tarantulas and what bad pets they are. I wrote a well informed letter to the editor with some statistics of the number of dog bite injuries/fatalities (800,00/26 respectively). I can...

    H. Lividum (Cobalt Blue)

My H. lividum seldom ever comes out, I haven't seen here in a few months now. They aren't generally friendly either and have a pretty severe venom from what I've read in the bite reports. If your relatively new to tarantula's I'd proceed cautiously and like someone had said earlier they are...

Brewster County, Tx (Another marathon trip to the Mexican border)

Hey Sky, next time you get ready for a hunt, give me a holler. If I'm not working I'm up for a road trip.

    Grammostola's fastest grower?

I'd say my G. aureostriata would be. I've noticed IMO that the larger the sp. the faster they "appear" to grow. My rosie slings grow slower than my fingernails whereas my chaco's are significantly faster.

Your dog's name wouldn't happen to be Lucky would it? He sounds a little mischievious.

A couple of pics from my last hunt

Me and my daughter stopped at this lake near where she lives to do a little hunting. All she had on was flip flops so she's wearing my desert combat boots. Pics may not be the greatest, took them with my phone. We did catch 2 A hentzi though... First pic is of the first burrow we came...

    My Little Patch of Desert

Great pics Sky, that was a ton of fun. I posted a pic of that first big female I caught dropping a sac, I believe she was the possible Carlsbad green. I'll keep you posted on it's status.

Cobalt blue staying out in the open?

Most of the time they are, however sometimes they will surprise you. Mine stays in her hide most of the time, but on occasion will come out. Last week she came out of her burrow, went around behind it, built another smaller one then returned to her previous burrow. For the most part she is a...

    Homeomme sp. "blue"...disfigured abdomen, help!

I had a D. faciatum with a suspicious bulge on her abd. as well, however she didn't do as well. I'm not sure what to do (other than provide water, etc), what can be done or even the etiology of these mystery masses. Sounds like your doing the right things, although I don't know if I'd rehouse...

Investment Quality Tarantulas? Cyriopagopus Sp. Blue, Xenethis sp, etc.

Any other species to consider? Anything coming up on the horizon I should look at? Basically my criteria: breedable by the average hobbyist**, and if chicks will dig the colors. Trying to answer some of your questions from your original post, I'm not sure about the technical data on the...

    New addition, IDing suggestions

I picked this up at a local pet shop that had numerous T's however the labeling on this one was way off (as was the price). They had it labeled as a Thai Tiger, obviously it's not. I'm pretty sure it's a Ephebopus sp. possibly E. uatuman however no greenish tint, maybe it needs a molt. Does...

    What T Should I Get?

I agree about a G. aureostriata, you may also look at B. klaasi although a tiny bit on the expensive side. P. nigricolor have good size and males have good color however they may not be as docile as you want. If you have $$$ you may consider X. immanis (or anything from this sp.!!) they too...

    Haplopelma longipes decision

I"m not sure where they are getting there T's (they don't know much about them), but they've come across some T's that you don't usually see at pet stores. I bought my 3 1/2-4" A. chalcodes there for around $15 or $20. I keep remembering what they have, they also have what was labeled as a...
