Have you considered using an acrylic cement to fasten the hinges and hasps? Once cured after a day or two there shouldn't be any concerns with fumes or the like, and since the application is on the outside it should be safe.

You may try the syringe/needle method if you should try it again, TL. It seems less invasive and leaves a smaller wound to seal. It should also reduce the area for bacteria to possibly invade. Oh and maybe a slight local antiseptic to clean the site prior to doing it. Just a suggestion. Oh...

I just keep them in 'fridge, take out what I'll use returning the container to 'fridge then warming up the prospective meals till they squirm around a bit. Just add T and let stand.
