I was quite exhausted by the time I squeezed back through that opening so I was mostly thinking about the hike back to the cabin. I was the first one back through the opening so I squeezed into a large open completely dark chamber and couldn't see the end of the squeeze. The spots on the floor...

Last week I visited a cave few people ever enter. The cave was Carracos Cave near Peñón, Santander, Colombia. The hike to the cave was 45 minutes through highland rainforest. Daytime temps about 75 with nighttime temps about 50 F. Altitude about 8000 ft. The cave has three levels. The...

I recently spent some time near the Chicamocha Canyon. The elevation was 9000 feet. The area is semi arid with grasses and cacti and some non-endemic Eucalyptus trees. I found a specie of tarantula that was very non-threatening. They never tried flicking hairs and they never threatened to...

    Colombia - Rainforest - Leticia

Hello, Not really. The picture was taken north of Leticia, Colombia in the month of August. It was the dry season. It had about 2 1/2 inch leg span. It didn't appear to be aggressive when I moved the leaf litter near it with my snake hook.

    Colombia - Rainforest - Leticia

The tarantulas around Leticia were extremely common where I hiked. Sometimes I found up to 4 nests in a square meter. The largest females were about 6 inches. There were adult males wandering looking for females, and they had about 4 inch leg spans. They were much more aggressive than the...

    Colombia - Rainforest - Leticia

Leticia in our summer is their dry season. We had fun hanging out at the market in the morning and watching them bring in the fish they caught during the night. The main diet here is fish. I got a bad case of chiggers while hiking in the rainforest. I had knee high rubber boots and they...
