Problem with "Hair" Growing in Arboreal Tank - HELP!

Why did you bake the peat and top soil? The bark I can understand because it came from your yard but what kind of bark was it? When you bake bark, first make sure that the bark you are using doesn't have anything on it. Scrub it under hot water first, then bake it at a low temperature, about...

A superworm burrowed in my tank!

That's right. They *might* eat them if they happen to catch the beatle right after it molts when its shell is still soft and red, but very rarely will tarantulas eat beatles. Their shells are too hard.

    Will they fight??

Ditto to the petsitter thing....I'd be livid, even though neither spider was harmed.

    Nematodes & Moss

Generally, those of us with natural set ups clean our materials before we put it in a spider's container. Yes, there are thousands of different species of nematodes, some are completely harmless to inverts, others are not. Unless you *know* the species of nematode, you're taking a risk with...

    Low temperatures and T's ???

My power has gone out at least 5 times since November and, living in the mountains in NW Washington, it's pretty dang cold here. My inverts have survived temperatures in the 50s for 8+ hours and none have croaked. Bear in mind, in nature, most tarantulas (terrestrial) live in burrows, and...

What happends if i get bit?

When people talk about OW bites as "excruciating" in the pain department, they are not exaggerating. My husband was bitten by his mature male H. lividum once. The spider, who was placid as could be, raced up his forceps and nailed him on the back of his hand and held on for dear life. The...

What happends if i get bit?

Chances are, if that Hap got its fangs into you, you'd get bit more than once. Many times I've heard of people, my husband included, being bitten by Haps repeatedly before the spider decided to detach its self from their flesh. Get a good pair of 12 inch rubber tipped forceps and *always*...

    Whats wrong with my Blondi?

What temperature are you keeping her in? When considering the climate in the forested regions of French Guyana (where blondi are commonly found), it often times differs from how we keep our blondi in captivity. Excerpt taken from a post made by Tarcan in another forum: Kind of gives a...

    Regarding Breeding Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens

Mikhail, I have absolutely no clue why the female died. What was even more odd was that she did not assume a death curl. She died just sitting. She did not even remotely look dead. This is the only time I've encountered this, my current C. cyan. has been doing just fine with her sac...until...

    Rehousing P. irminia slings x3

After my P. irminia's egg sac hatched out, I had s'lings everywhere. Navigating these buggers is not easy. Here's what I do with fast, feisty arboreals who would rather cut and run than be herded. I take a piece of tissue or paper towel, loosely roll it into a tube so the outside fits just...

How do you make a good quality digger tank for a burrowing spider

If you have a Michael's craft store near you, check there. They will be more expensive but they have just about anything you could possibly want from leaves to berries to flowers. All of my murnius are different. Some burrow, some prefer to be arboreal and some like to do a little of both...

    a few questions

If they're adults, yes you can. C. fasciatum and P. murnius do not get very large so something that size for an adult would be just fine. You don't need anything larger. If they are still s'lings then you'll want to put them into something smaller than that.

Sounds like the next time you see her, she'll be a brand new girl with an exuvia inside her hide. :D

New Tarantula, might be Xenesthis Immanis?

{D My thoughts exactly. Beautiful spider, no matter what it is.

    A. seemanni got the wrong idea?

Yep, all that will do is stress it out. Mine doesn't dig either. She has her hide as well as plenty of substrate to burrow in but all she does is make little divits where her favorite lounge spots are.

    Substrate preference poll

What's that....CEDAR mulch? Makes me wonder how long this person's tarantulas have lived and how well they're doing. Remind me to NOT buy that stuff. Me personally, I like just plain ole' 100% peat moss. Versatile, inexpensive, holds moisture well when needed, doesn't turn into stone...

    Starving Tarantulas

I can't say as that I've ever had a tarantula starve to death. I've aquired tarantulas that were nearly starved, but that didn't last long. ;)

    Cyclosternum fasciatum

I've kept all of mine in different conditions to see how they would react. Of the 6 I've had, I've kept them on dry peat and a water dish only as well as slightly moist peat and dry peat with the occasional light misting. All had ample substrate to burrow in as well as deep, dark hides. The...

What's the longest your shipment took to come and was it alive?

My longest shipment was the very first shipment I ever ordered online. The package was set up to ship DHL overnight....it took 2 days and my husband ended up having to travel 60 miles to pick it up. They said if we wanted it delivered to our door, it would take an additional 2 days....this was...

    measuring arboreal legspans

I just meausre arboreals when they're stretched out and go with that because they're more likely to be stretched out than a terrestrial and while "sitting" is a terrestrial's natural position, "stretching" is an arboreal's natural position.
