Weird. I wasn't really sure what it was but I guessed it was some sort of wasp. Thanks for clearing it up. This fellow seems to be a long ways from home.
A friend of mine photographed this thing the other day. He said that the rock it was resting on was as big as his fist. Any idea what it is? The photo could be better but it's the only one he managed to get before it took off. The photo was taken in southwestern Ontario, Canada.
A friend of mine ate guinea pig on a recent trip to Peru. He said it was pretty tasty. I'm not sure if I could stomach it personally but different strokes I suppose.
I live in Southwestern Ontario and mantids were plentiful around here when I was a kid in the 70's and 80's. To my recollection I've only seen two of them in the last five years or so and both of those accidentally made their way into my place of employment. I let both of them go outside hoping...
I came across this bit of footage in my internet travels. It certainly looks like a leech but it actually seems to be ingesting the worm as opposed to just "leeching" off it. Is it indeed a leech or some other animal?

I was recently visiting a friend of mine in the Niagara region here in Ontario. At night these insects gathered around the outside light. They were fairly large and I don't believe I've seen them before. What exactly are they?
Thanks to everyone for the input.

You think? I've never seen one with a blue carapace and a reddish abdomen before. They have A. seemani at the same store but none of them are coloured the same as this one is.
Got this for $10.00 from our less than knowledgeable local pet store. The tag on the tank listed it as a "Pink Beauty". The carapace has a nice dark blue sheen when illuminated and it isn't aggressive at all. Could someone please ID it?
