    planning for power outages.

Heat packs should be put on one far side of your enclosure so your T can freely move to or away from the heat as it feels necessary. It's the same principal as using a heat pad, if you were to use one. I'd suggest looking at one of those threads as a referance.

    Isopod Problem

Feeder insects from outside are generally a no-no, but you need to keep a few things in mind to determine how harmful they can be. First, the type of area you live in can greatly affect what types of pesticides and chemicals are used. Rural areas can use harsher substances as opposed to...

Sponges are bad in water dishes?

Here's one more point on top of the good ones already made. Most sponges you'd get at a store contain chemicals to prevent mold and mildew growth. After a while the chemicals wash away and the sponge then becomes a home for the things the chemicals were holding off.

    What a curious little monster...

I've only had mine a short while, but have yet to see any signs of hyper defensive/skittish/psycho behavior. I'd read a great deal about H. gigas having pretty bold behaviors. I was supprised to see in other threads how many had tame T's from this sp. My gigas has a personality a few notches...

If a T is molting and you don't know it...

Harsh words aside, I agree with Lucara. Not knowing what behaviors to expect in a new animal isn't a mistake. That's forgiveable cause nature can throw a wrench in the works ever so often (rosie). Not doing research into a complicated exotic pet before a purchase isn't a mistake either. For the...

High Humidity Enclosure for Burrowing Tarantulas

Thank You! Drilling plexi isn't really an option for me due to a lack of work space and tools. The thought crossed my mind to do some kind of "thatch work" using thin stripps of some kind of safe wood like mahogany. The sphagnum would assist in retarding the growth of mold (which is why the...

    False bottom and arboreal tarantulas

The OP is asking about false bottoms in an arboreal set up. Burrowing has nothing to do with what's happening here. There are plenty of arboreal tarantulas with humidity requirements around 80% and just keeping a full water dish or misting/watering/whatever isn't enough at times. Not to...

    New little Skunky

Your skunks are rad! I've wanted a pet skunk since like jr. high. If I wasn't already familiar with WI I would want to move there just for the skunks.

High Humidity Enclosure for Burrowing Tarantulas

Post Script As I stated previously, this is a prototype, a work in progress. I would like to switch the plant to something that had limited vertical space, a sparse/shallow root system, low light and medium water requirements. Also, the coco fibre may have issues letting the water evaporate...

High Humidity Enclosure for Burrowing Tarantulas

Humidity I designed the plant feature to work as a tool to administer water to the false bottom in two ways. The first way is to just pour water into the tube. This waters the plant and drains through the coco/sphagnum/hydro ball layers and into the false bottom. Another way to use this is the...

High Humidity Enclosure for Burrowing Tarantulas

Substrate and False Bottom For the false bottom I used clay hydro balls found in the reptile section of my chain LPS. The idea behind these is that they absorb water and slowly release it as well as increase surface area for evaporation. When you first get a bag it's got a fair amount of dust...

High Humidity Enclosure for Burrowing Tarantulas

Living Plant/Watering Feature With high humidity requirements I wanted living plants to be a feature of my enclosure to provide a secondary ambient humidity source. The false bottom being the first. I picked up a generic small palm plant of sorts from a Home Depot (I was already there for...

High Humidity Enclosure for Burrowing Tarantulas

Incorporating design elements from false bottom enclosures and those that use live plants I have constructed a high humidity enclosure designed for fossorial species such as Citharischius crawshayi and Hysterocrates gigas. In terms of tarantula terrariums false bottoms are usually reserved for...

    Impulse Buy: H. gigas

I've always been pretty good at getting a T to pose with a ruler. Just got the knack... j/k As I was getting her out of the jar I purchased her in I noticed she was bashfull and pretty mild mannered. That's why I got enough guff to try to put hands on her. When she was on my black stage for...

    Impulse Buy: H. gigas

Thanks for saying so, I was thinking the same thing. *fingers crossed* The first 3 pix on black backround are pretty jacked in terms of lighting, but the others with the T on coco fiber are in line with it's colors in real life. I was reading that a gigas can change color greatly from post...

    Impulse Buy: H. gigas

After having received 3 slings in the mail a couple weeks ago I swore I was done getting T's till at least September. That was until a little birdy told me about a really good LPS that had tons of tarantulas and I was compelled to nab something I wanted for a while. I was on the fence till the...

    Avocado - toxic?

I'm sure the super high fat content coupled with the fact that it's difficult to digest and break down for most animals is a contributing factor to the complicatons the others experienced when feeding avocado. Maybe you got luck y or maybe the ability to eat it varies from roach sp. to roach sp.

    Good Question

More importantly, any sponge sold as a kitchen or cleaning sponge has chemicals in it that inhibit the growth of mold and mildew. It also acts as an anti bacterial agent to control odors. These chemicals aren't listed on sponges because most people don't know or care enough yet to have them...

    Possible Paraphysa scrofa?

A PetCo in my area has a Rose Hair for sale, but I noticed it looked way darker than a normal rosie. After a few days of thinking about it, I asked to have a look and it has a definate "copper" or metallic brown color to it's carapace. The legs seem darker than a rosies ought to be too. The size...
