I'll be taking a trip to Barbados soon and plan to go bug hunting, not with the intent of bringing back though just more catching and releasing, like terrestrial fishing. What kinds of 'pedes can I expect to find?
Also, would it be considered smuggling or otherwise illegal if I attempted to...
All these pics makes me wanna get a snake of my own at some point, but even if I had the space for one I'd most likely have to wait until I'm established in my own living quarters before that could happen:wall:
Avicularia metallica ("Pinky")-adult female. My second T. Cause of death: unclear, but likely old age.
Hysterocrates gigas ("Adama")-sub-adult. Cause of death: unclear.
Aphonopelma seemanni ("Lydia")-adult female. Cause of death: shipping accident (tried to sell her to someone else...
I bought a small heat mat and one of those adjustable dimmer things from Petco, but the darn overheats so easily. I have the dimmer switch set on below 70, but the digital thermo probe I have suctioned right on the source reads 95! I think that's a bit too hot, so I'm trying to get it in the 85...
Oh god, I hate these posts. I always feel compelled to answer, but never know quite how! Every time I think "if I could keep all but ONE T (from my current collection), who would it be?" I always think "THAT one, no wait, THAT one, NO..." So difficult to decide.
That said, my "true" answer...
I was handling my adult male (normal phase) leo, Sobek, and he looked kind of plump to me, though I wouldn't be so quick to call him obese. I did a quick search on weight issues with geckos and, not surprisingly, geckos CAN get overweight/obese.
My boy is cared for mostly be my mother since I'm...
I mostly feed B. lateralis, but I've got dubias and hissers, too. My blondi mostly gets the hissers, but smaller ones are fed to anything that can handle them.
Have you considered great peppered roaches (Archimandrita tesselata) or Blaberus fusca? They might work as they both get to around 3" and supposedly breed easily, but I've never raised them. I'm also tempted to offer B. discoidalis but I tried them and couldn't get them to breed for some reason...
Blatta lateralis imo is the best roach, perhaps best feeder insect. They reproduce fast and I haven't met any T that wouldn't eat them, most likely b/c they run everywhere, unlike Dubias, which have a habitat of "freezing." The only thing I don't like about them is their speed, but at least they...
Yeah that's what I figured. I asked b/c I've seen them for sale on Todd Gearhart's website from time to time, but couldn't find much captive care info about them. Not sure if I will try it or not, though.
Is there any Ts you've always wanted ever since you first discovered the hobby but for some reason or another never ended up getting? When I first became an enthusiast I always thought it would be a blast to own an A. geniculata or a GBB and said I would, when I got a little more experience...
Trying adding more fruit, not just oranges, which are good nonetheless. I've heard Dubias have trouble reproducing if they don't get enough fruit. Some veggies (like lettuce or kale) might not be a bad idea.
I fed mine mostly goldfish flakes and bread and only occasionally oranges/fruit. I...
