I've kept most pokie species over the years with few exceptions...raised some from tiny slings, some from juveniles. (metallica being one of the exceptions) I've never found them to be problematic or temperamental with regard to husbandry etc.
Pucker factor when opening an enclosure and proper...
I kept Avics for years and years in enclosures with top-only ventilation, no issues.
That goes for raising tiny spiderlings, all the way to adults. Avic avic, versicolor. This started way before that was a board with people telling me it doesn't work.
Maybe there's an avic that would die or...
To me it will be whiteout a doubt....around there though it's just another spider to remove from your kitchen...males anyway as I'm sure the big females are roaming about.
I've already met a native (not indigenous) who said he'd take me out as he likes hiking at night looking for critters.
Thank you. Interesting info so far...I thought Cyriocosmus was higher elevation for some reason...probably just made that up.
Been down a few times recently for recon, but only had T's on the mind in the periphery...so didn't think to look at fences etc. :)
I'll eventually be IN the jungle, so...
That's the only answer appropriate for this forum.
Bottom line, the opportunity presented itself...so we're going. It's an adventure.
I'll definitely take photos at some point...there will be many night walks.
Moving for many, various, layered, reasons. :)
With regard to husbandry etc I'll be pursuing fishy interests and not so much T's...but I still have an interest so plan to keep my eye out.
Figured I'd ask.
I'll get some natives to take me out.
Been off the boards for a long time (since around 2012) I sold all my T's, concentrated on other things etc.
However, my wife and I are moving to Peru, about 20 miles into the jungle in the Madre de Dios/Peurto Maldonado area.
Anyone know, aside from Avic avic, what species I might find in the...
I've seen several mentions of 'threat poses' here in this thread.
Let's keep in mind that many bites occur without the formality of a threat pose, and with pokeys that's more often
than not how it happens.
Exactly.
I think people who's husbandry methodology is based on reading message boards rather than long years of experience are more likely to
be of the opinion that cross ventilation is necessary.
I never even heard it mentioned until I found this forum one day, and that after years of...
In a few decades of doing this, I've never cross ventilated anything, not avic slings - nothing.
Somebody said "cross ventilation" one day, and it just stuck, and spread, never mind actual empirical data.
Annoying isn't it?
One of the main reasons I don't come around that much anymore.
Instead of actually answering a question, I end up asking the person to please type like a human who's been to elementary school.
You know it's funny, my smithi seems to be bent on filling in the dish ASAP, and one of my GBB's webs it over almost immediately. :) These are two of the handful of my specimens that get a dish, but just funny that they refuse to use it and seem almost offended by it's presence.
