Yes. Since Epipremnum sp. plants are not topically irritating and tarantulas don't nibble plants, they're safe for tarantulas. But I would not use any Epipremnum/pothos with omnivorous/herbivorous/detrivorous/etc. animals because the insoluble oxalates can be toxic to inverts (and vertebrates...
Thank you for trying to talk the other person out of his misinformed opinion. Any actions he takes based on the opinion, or any advice he gives to others based on that option, could be dangerous to some spiders. So thank you.
Short answer, I can't say that most moisture-dependent inverts would...
I can't comment on other aspects of husbandry, but no one has mentioned the UV light yet so I want to mention- My understanding is that arachnids see really well in UV light, and it's been shown that scorpions have a strong avoidance response to UV light. So i don't know how much you use the UV...
Gotcha. Unfortunately I don't know what else to say at this point, other than I hope that whatever is causing the deformity isn't something that's going to rupture when she molts, and that I'm rooting for her. Short of diagnostics by an experienced veterinarian (possibly at a university) to look...
There are many animals all across the animal kingdom who have the instinct to put their waste in water. It makes sense to have this instinct as water, especially running water, would be great at washing away waste (thereby helping to control growth of harmful pathogens or avoid attracting pests...
That pic, as heartbreaking as it is to see, is an example of the dystonia I mentioned before, another possible symptom of DKS, for anyone now or in the future who might need a visual reference. It's when the body is in a stiff, frozen, and often contorted position. This, sadly, is what that...
It is true that sometimes over-stimulation can increase prevalence/incidence of the symptoms of neurological dysfunction. This doesn't necessarily correlate to a worsening of the condition itself, or mean that a T shouldn't go to the vet. Like, I don't tell chronically/serially seizing animals...
@Firestorm3 I'm sorry that it got sidetracked and muddled, it should have been a quick open/shut type of thing. But on the other hand, I'm also glad correct information is put out there. I know this is a terrible time for you, but this thread might help other people in your shoes, either now or...
I'm not familiar with treating aspergillosis in inverts, but in vertebrates like birds, dogs, and cats it usually only affects animals that have been immunocompromised in some way, like from inappropriate husbandry or much weight loss or underlying disease. And the disseminated aspergillosis...
@Firestorm3 , if you have vet nearby that has some tarantula experience, or you live near a college of veterinary medicine, you could consider seeing if any vet there will treat your poor spood. I mentioned this because there are many things a vet could possibly do, including running blood work...
This species doesn't need warmth like that, they do just fine cooler than many T species. As long as it's above 60°F, you're good. hamorri could def be fine as low as 65°F. Excessive heat can be detrimental for either, especially where desiccation is concerned. I don't know how warm her spot is...
Interesting, I was just reading today about the various strategies of the immune system of Ts and it mentioned the role of melanin in encapsulating perceived threats, but I didn't even put it together. It seems quite possible that the melanin deposits might be a reaction to the mineral...
What? No, Dyskinesia in tarantulas isn't "better compared to coughing and sneezing" in humans... If you have to make a comparison to humans, then Dyskinesia is tarantulas is better compared to dyskinesia in humans.
Which, by the way, also presents very similarly, has similar symptoms, and also...
I don't understand. How so? And why are you more qualified than a veterinarian or vet tech to make that assertion? I assure you that tarantulas are capable of experiencing those. Also, see last quote below.
You're not arguing with me. You're arguing with vets and vet techs and research...
I think most of your information on DKS is great, and thank you for it! It's just this one point that is incorrect.
DKS is not just one symptom. DKS is a syndrome, which is a condition recognized by a collection of associated symptoms. Your forgetting all DKS's possible symptoms including...
Hi! Welcome to the forum!
To help you, I think we'd need more information. What is the stretched DLS (diagonal leg span) of the spider? Has she closed off her burrow? About what temp is she kept at? We need pix of the spider from above and the enclosure from above and side, please.
I can't see enough of the enclosure to comment more, but the part I can see appears fairly deep but really dry. Do you give her moisture in the substrate? And also a water dish?
Full enclosure pix, please.
Love her name, btw, fabulous!
