I was researching these and other crabs a good bit over the years. I’ve been wanting to set up some nice crab enclosures, but haven’t gotten around to it. Vampires are beautiful and seem to be hit or miss with ease of care based off their health when they arrive and given the proper set up. They...
Just wanted to say these are really cool and I wish you the best of luck with them! Keep us updated on how they do. I have been interested in getting some of these or patriot crabs.
Thank you for that info! I was reading into their breeding, heard rumors of someone in the UK doing it, but have no idea if that's true. May be a fun project some day, I have a background with reef aquariums so that might help a bit. Even with everything, I'm sure it'd be hard/near impossible.
@DR zuum hey, old thread... just seeing if you are still around. Still have a big interest in these crustaceans, but haven't kept any yet. Was wondering if you knew <edit> if anyone is breeding these?
I've known a couple people that bred earwigs. I even have them living in my feeder dish(of all places) in my chameleon's outside enclosure. Probably ridiculous to worry about them hurting with their pincers, crickets probably have a larger chance of hurting your animal lol.
I think I'm going to give this horse food a try. It seems high quality and the price isn't bad for 25lbs of it. Might add some spirulina, alfalfa pellets, bee pollen, and a few other things to it too and see if I notice any differences.
I have had P. Hoffmannseggi over a year and they are doing pretty well. I had P. Ornatus 'yellow dot', which seemed to be very prolific and easy until they all got wiped out. I'm almost certain that was from a one time overwatering+lack of ventilation+too much heat situation. They were cool...
Been on a mission to find an affordable, large amount of nutritious food for all of my roach/isopod colonies(40+). I've been using the big bags of organic carrots along with all kinds of veggie/fruit scraps and bags of rolled oats. Wanted to replace the oats with something better, I came across...
Mine are kept bioactively, but I haven't used any plants. Hissers end up eating just about anything IME, I can't imagine many plants holding up to them.
I've recently had this happen with my P. Ornatus. They were being kept same as my P. Hoffmannseggi. Ornatus until then were some of my most prolific and hardy isopods. Had well over a hundred at one point. Within idk how long, maybe a week or two, the entire colony died off. My hoffs on the...
No problem with the questions, I've only been keeping roaches for 4ish years. I know the feeling of wanting everything to be right. Everything you mention should work well, they aren't too picky.
I have a giant colony of these guys, they eat pretty much anything. I find they can be a little sensitive when starting up though. Dry conditions with a moisture spot, good ventilation, and fruits/veggies with some sort of protein source available will do the trick. I also keep mine with a lot...
Thank you, didn't know anyone replied.
It is an old 8g CAD cube starfire aquarium. Has the hole in the back top left where I was going to have water pumped out of for the waterfall. Then there are slits for water intake on the bottom right and top right like an overflow. I'm going to try and...
I have a cube aquarium with a stand laying around. Used to be a saltwater nano with the compartment in the back to hide equipment/mini refugium. I've been wanting to make a paludarium for a long time and I think vampire crabs are amazing so figured I'd do something with this.
I've been trying...
No intention to be a smartass when I say, unless there is some sort of special property to aluminum that repels roaches, then they will be able to climb it. They're not like crickets or most roaches that struggle with smooth surfaces, these guys can run up a slick plastic/metal surface no...
