Ive been considering solitary bees. The Southern California varities are gorgeous(Im in Los Angeles).
I wanted to provide housing for them next to my garden.
Maybe this spring I'll get one of those $20 multi-cell enclosures.
Soapy water worked well...very quick too.
Now, do Lobster Roaches live bear or do they lay eggs. I need to know how long to wait before any unborn are no longer viable. That way I know when to dump the remains. Freezing isnt an option.
Its tough to get a quality shot, but I'll try...it exposes its ventral area all the time...nasty lil bugger.:shame:
EDIT:
Still too fuzzy...but the pocket is small and tight. The first two book lungs sit inboard quite a bit...resulting in a narrow trapaozoidal pattern when connecting all...
The coldest it gets is low 60s at night to the low 80s during the day...I even had a low 90 deg stretch of days last year. Its Southern California...it has to be warm enough for it.
The meals are large, I feed it adult lobster roaches, so it gets full and bloated quicjkly after a few meals...
Yeah, they are Phorids. Ive had small infestations in the past, usually due to having vegetabl ematter with too much moisture added to the enclosure. Imnot sure what the potential risk is of having them in the enclosure, but so many of them cant be a good sign of a healthy habitat for feed...
My current Lobster Roach Colony is now out of hand. The enclosure is too small for th enumbers, the Sumer Conditions have spawned a fruit fly infestation that is actually ggting worse this time around...generally they bloom for a few weeks and then die off when I keep the moisture down.
This...
**Update**
Well, my P. Metallica is a now over 2.5yrs old and he/she is a whopping 3 inches leg span front to back.:?
The lil bugger eats well, is currently pretty bloated...but it refuses to molt. Its doing just fine, as become a bit more aggressive since its last molt sometime ago...
Because I just found something that looks just like one. It was about 1 inch long, seemingly the same color and patterns as the species shown in Iraq.
All I have is a fuzzy cell phone picture of it. It was in the lobby of Hangar Two here at Burbank Airport.

Great enclosures, the 8x8x16 is a good choice when it matures...and who knows, you may be able to request a larger one in the future...at least I plan to.
I'd like a 10x10x24 or even 14x14x32 or so. My pokie is going to be a display specimen...most, if not all, will be...
I fed my Rosea for the first time in a couple of months. I didnt think about it until later...
but I dropped the roach in. The roach hits the ground and looks to hide. I have some cheap chopsticks I use to nudge the roach out of hiding and toward the T.
As Im tapping around trying to...
I'll try and get one this evening when it comes out for its 5pm showing.
*edit*
5:45p and the T is out for its evening showing...unfortunatly its too dark and my camera phone to crappy to get a good shot.
I have to say, the skunk stripe on the abdomen is much more pronounced than I...
I think the sling is a he...:(
It still has its heavy juvenile markings and stripes, but its color is certainly coming out.
I assume the next molt will be definitive...currently the dorsal stripe is still heavy, no real white skunk strip on the abdomen yet, so maybe it'll disappear next...
I'd bet that you should be about as concerned about a T bite as you should be about my bite.
There is no reason to assume your Bee allergy should correlate to a T allergy...not that you cant cant be allergic to Ts also, they are just unlikly to be related.
Now if your bee allergy is due to...
P. Metallica. Its big, colorful, highly ornate/decorated,, high contrast, doesnt mind being visible(at least mind doesnt).
I plan to place it in a tall enclosure with some nice gnarly, branchy wood, foliage high and low. Then surround the enclosure and area with the appropriatly looking...
