    Funny common names

I agree entirely with the sentiments expressed here and in other threads, especially when it comes to selling, or just in discussion in general. I can read and write the correct names of all of my inverts, but to be honest, I've never heard most of them pronounced and admit I never studied...

Where do you keep you T's?

I keep mine at work (my office in an elementary school) on bookshelves. On each shelf I've added a curtain on a tension rod. Works great, quiet, no one disturbs them and vice versa. When I'm living in an apartment that allows pets, I keep them in a spare bedroom. I'm sure it also helps that...

    A big thank you

I appreciate you, @magicmed, and the others who ask such excellent questions and spark such helpful discourse. I'm not technically a newbie (first T almost 20 years ago), and I've been a member here at arachnoboards.com since 2003. But despite all of my research and reading, I sure still feel...

question for the married men. (breeding roaches)

Bearded Dragons can be very personable little pets and they eat roaches. I say go for it! :)

question for the married men. (breeding roaches)

From the other side of the fence... before I married (my now ex-husband), he tried to be 'tough' and exclaimed that all of my animals were "cool" and "awesome". Turned out, he was horribly phobic about tarantulas and reptiles, and just flat out disgusted by rats, mice, frogs, geckos, guinea...

    No more crickets!!!!!!

I can't help jump in and make a pitch for S lateralis (aka Turkistan, Red Racers, Rust Reds, Red Runners, etc.) I can not stand crickets, and would never have re-entered the tarantula keeping hobby if it weren't for these roaches. Yes, they're fast. But I did my research and figured out how...

    Keeping food for Two Tarantulas

@owlbear , ewww, I never noticed any kind of slime - hope I never do! Their speed was worrisome to me at first, but I found ways to work around that and have no troubles in that department. Perfect for my needs, as long as no slime....

    Keeping food for Two Tarantulas

Well, @Andrea82, I do work with kids with behavior difficulties.... luckily, my critters have always been more of a reward than a punishment! (sorry to the original poster, for derailing your original question!)

    Keeping food for Two Tarantulas

@Wolfden, there have been unexpected benefits to working in a tiny, rural, one-school district. (as a former city girl, I never thought I'd say this!) That said, I keep all of my critters at work (my apartment lease is quite strict about no pets) including a colony of roaches. All on shelves...

    Keeping food for Two Tarantulas

I've found some online sources who have been amazingly flexible with me. Even if their smallest amount advertised is 500, they'll send me 50 (and for less than I'd pay at a reptile show, even with shipping.) For roaches, in the midwest, for much of the year there's no need for overnight...

    Keeping food for Two Tarantulas

Lots of great advice/suggestions from members far more experienced than I. For what it's worth, I recently returned to the hobby about three years ago (after 20 years absence). To be honest, I dislike crickets so much that I wouldn't have considered another tarantula if I hadn't discovered...

    Educational Performances?

That was my thread, asking for "cute, silly-sounding names (inspired by an excellent post from @chanda (her post is linked in my thread, she does presentations as well). http://arachnoboards.com/threads/not-your-average-help-me-name-my-ts-request.284050/ I work in the school setting already...

@AllyInvert - do you think your daughters would be willing to use their creativity to make name suggestions for mine?? (they're listed in the first post)

@Vincenzo - back in the day, when I had my own classroom, I did exactly this. It is amazing how much it increases motivation for learning! Nowadays, I don't work directly with students very often . Otherwise, I agree, especially about the snowball effect.

My (student named) corn snake, Marlene, helped many of my co-workers to get over their initial fears of seeing a snake. Love the name Fred. Reminds me of Mr. Rogers, and that's about the most calming name I know. =)
