@owlbear , ewww, I never noticed any kind of slime - hope I never do! Their speed was worrisome to me at first, but I found ways to work around that and have no troubles in that department. Perfect for my needs, as long as no slime....

@Wolfden, there have been unexpected benefits to working in a tiny, rural, one-school district. (as a former city girl, I never thought I'd say this!) That said, I keep all of my critters at work (my apartment lease is quite strict about no pets) including a colony of roaches. All on shelves...

I've found some online sources who have been amazingly flexible with me. Even if their smallest amount advertised is 500, they'll send me 50 (and for less than I'd pay at a reptile show, even with shipping.) For roaches, in the midwest, for much of the year there's no need for overnight...

@Vincenzo - back in the day, when I had my own classroom, I did exactly this. It is amazing how much it increases motivation for learning! Nowadays, I don't work directly with students very often . Otherwise, I agree, especially about the snowball effect.

My (student named) corn snake, Marlene, helped many of my co-workers to get over their initial fears of seeing a snake. Love the name Fred. Reminds me of Mr. Rogers, and that's about the most calming name I know. =)
