I'm glad I'm not the only one who's freaked out about these things!! Hopefully, one day I will be able to give good advice instead of just asking for it.
Spider finally made it out of her old exoskeleton. I checked her just a few minutes ago and she's all the way out - white fangs and all...
Thanks for the kind words. I feel like such a dork for having posted in the first place.... I watched her for 3 hours last night and 2 hours this morning and she didn't move at all and than as soon as I pushed the "post" button to ask if she's dead, she started moving her legs around. :wall...
She's moving!!! She's not dead. *huge sigh of relief* She's still nowhere close to being out of the old exo, but at least I saw her move. I'm working at home today, so I'm hoping that I get to see the molt in progress.
Sorry to be such a worrier. This is her first molt since I've had her.
I am new at this hobby. I adopted a rosea last July. She's been exhibiting all of the signs of molting - not eating for about a month, dark abdomen. Last night I came home to find her in her hide on her back so I figured she was molting.
When I woke up this morning, I expected to see her...
thanks so much for the reply. I'll try to relax, but it's hard not to worry. I guess I was expecting to see her move or something.
I've had two b. smithi slings since august and they've both molted with no problem, but I've never actually seen it.
Thanks again-
Niddy
I've had my rosea since about July. She stopped eating about a month ago and her abdomen turned dark, so I knew she was about to molt. Having never experienced this before, I was shocked at the sight of her lying on her back when I came home from work tonight.
Can anyone tell me how long a...
Thanks all for the replies. I feel much more reassured now.
I think the humidity and ventilation should be OK. What do you think? He is in a cottage-cheeze sized deli container. I used a darning needle (large guage) to poke about 50 holes in the top of the container and about 20 holes...
Hi -
More newbie questions for you experts: I have had an A. versicolor sling (about 1/2 inch) for 3 weeks. He ate on the day that I got him and again after 10 days. Both times he ate an injured cricket that was near his body size (excluding his legs). He hasn't eaten for the past 11 days...
I checked this evening and it *was* webs wicking the water into the substrate. Without your help, I'd still be scratching my head about this one. I knew spider couldn't be that thirsty.
I keep the enclosure farily dry and only add a bit of moisture if I oveflow the water dish. If I see any...
Thanks for the replies; I appreciate the help. I will stop overfilling the water dish since she doesn't need it.
As far as the water dish goes, it definitely isn't evaporation - low humidity isn't an issue here (Seattle - rain city). I will check for the webs around the dish to see if that...
Hi -
I am fairly new to tarantulas and am concerned about my rosea's strange behavior. I have had my rosea for about 2 months now. I generally clean her water dish once or twice a week (unless she poops in it) and when I do, it is generally at least half full. She has one of those little...
If the deli section isn't accomodating, check the foil/plastic wrap section of your grocery store. They make all kinds of see-through "disposable" plastic tubs now (Glad, etc.) - you can get half a dozen for about 3 bucks and there are lots of sizes to choose from.
Thanks again. I hear what you are saying about live food with respect to allowing the spider to hunt and for cleanliness, but I just don't have the stomach for taking the legs off crickets or crushing thier heads. I can honestly say that I don't feel experienced enough to even attempt a...
Thanks for your answers.
Yes, I am feeding pre-killed because the crickets available when my slings arrived were too large. I was "guaranteed" when I called my local Petco that they carried pinheads; however, when I arrived I discovered that they were actually "small" (a little bigger than...
Hi -
I just got a 1/2" A. versicolor sling last week. This is my first time dealing with slings and I have a couple of questions which I hope those with more experience can answer.
My house is generally about 70 degrees F. Should I provide some additional heat for the sling or is room...
