I like Betta fish acrylic enclosures that you can buy for cheap at Petsmart/Petco. Here are a couple of types (the H. maculata is ready for a move, but looking at ideas for adult enclosure). Some modification to the lids are required.
I love my one Pokie - P. rufilata. I got her as a sling and she's pretty big now (not sure of sex). She runs whenever she sees me, so it's easy to feed and water her (she'll be in her hide). Not aggressive at all, if you ask me. I don't handle my Ts at all, ever. I do see her a lot, as...
I have 7 Ts, and 3 are arboreal. I think arboreals are my favourites (I'd love to get more).
My first was Avic. metallica. Very boring, and hasn't grown very much. Cool web though.
Second was P. cambridgei - fast for sure, but doesn't act aggressive and is visible all the time...
Yes, but...15 pounds is about equivalent to $30. The US dollar isn't doing so well lately. I lived in Scotland for 5 years and am in a lot of debt from it (though mostly school expenses).
I have this book. It is very interesting and has a lot of information. However, I have yet to see an invertebrate patient (and I'm an exotics vet). I do have 8 Ts myself, but they've (luckily) had no health issues so far.
You can use a soldering iron (cheap at the hardware store, Walmart etc.). Caution though - I did this for a spiderling and the holes were too large. My spiderling P. rufilata escaped and was never found (it's been about 5-6 months now). Instead, for the replacement sling, I just used a drill...
I actually didn't even meet the previous owner. The receptionist just brought the rosie (who I am naming "Fluffy") back to me in the treatment room. She's been pretty active so far. Not the pet rock that some make them seem to be. She's definitely more active than my Lasiodora difficilis at...
I thought I was done - was very happy with my 7 tarantulas for several months (I don't think I've had a new one since October or November). ...and THEN: someone came to work (I'm a vet) looking to re-home their Rose Hair because they were moving! OMG, I couldn't say "no". I am the *only*...
I keep 8 Ts, 1 frog, 2 cats, and 1 noisy bird in my apartment. The apartment managers only know about the cats and bird (they usually don't allow birds, but since I'm a veterinarian they made a special allowance for me). I refuse to ask or tell about the Ts...what the managers don't know won't...
I would choose the T. apophysis. I have always tended to choose the "less common" and I also like the look of T. apophysis (the pink toes when young!) better.
GBBs don't like much water - so I suggest you only mist once a week, and don't totally saturate the enclosure. Too much moisture will kill a GBB.
Congrats on the new sling! :)
My plan for 2008 is to NOT GET ANY MORE Ts! I am not allowed to. :)
Instead I can start thinking about how I will continue to house them as they grow, so my computer/guest room doesn't truly become a spider room.
I would also like to find my escaped P. rufilata sling.
I'd go with the Pokie! P. metallica. If only I could afford one...I'd probably have one (though I am seriously NOT allowed to get any more Ts!). I have one Pokie right now and so far it stays out in the open a lot of the time (I love that) and moves around a lot.
So far, only my Lasiodora difficilis has done this. I stopped pouring the water in after that - now I remove the soda bottle cap and fill it up manually. It was kinda funny to watch, but probably stressful for the T.
You're being paranoid. I've ordered online many times (all the times I've bought Ts, for that matter) and had ZERO deaths. The Ts are happy and healthy.
