Do something
Why not join your local Humane Society as a volunteer?
That way, when an issue involving T's comes up, they bring you in. I went to a LPS with a Humane Society Inspector and wrote an Order to Comply for the
owner on several issues I observed involving Tarantulas, Scorpions and...
I was out of town for a few days and went to feed my female A. geniculata.
She lept as high as she could and grabbed the pinkie from the tweezers and landed on her back. This is the same girl who violently attacked a paint brush during cage cleaning. Luckily, she dropped onto soft substrate. I...
Feeding
I agree, with the few opinions, that when we remove an organsim from it's natural enviroment we also remove how that organism deals with stress. I believe this relates to the stress of feeding. Basically the 'flight or fight'
thing we all learned in School. If a T is faced with a...
Live feeders?
Wow, I can't believe I read that. I can understand if you have a reluctant feeder and have no alternative. Aside from the stress on the feeder mouse/bird and that whole 'higher sentient thing' are you not concerned with damage to your spider?
Are you looking for a big thumbs up...
I've had good like with my A. geniculata talking anything offered. She's like the human version of 'Mikey'. Crickets, super mealworms, thawed pinkies.
I even tried her successfully on dew worms for variety.
I keep a large Wolf cichlid handy for unwanted/uneaten food items.

Morning,
Any B. rudloffi lovers notice they spend a lot of time in the substrate?
I have mine in a soil/peat mixture with drift wood and rarely see the darlings unless I go looking.

Leash laws suck!
Dee,
I'd anonymously check with your Municipality concerning the by-laws on keeping T's or Pit Bull type dogs for your roomie. T's can be hidden, Pit Bulls, nah.
Recent legislative amendments will make ownership of a Pit Bull and their cross breeds illegal. After that...
Poor conditions
If conditions are that bad and persist why not contact the local ASPCA?
Advise or give your ASPCA Inspectors a basic care sheet for terrestrial/aboreal T's. Those stores can be charged and their animals seized if the minimum care standards aren't maintained.
I've seen worse...
Care of E. murinus
Good morning,
I purchased 3 WC E.murinus a month ago. They're about 4" total length. One seemed to waste away to nothing in that short time frame. She wouldn't touch any prey left with her before expiring. Are there any precautions I can take with my other 2?
Temp is 75...
Super hobby!
I just started this year and boy does it get out of control!
Currently I have,
3 - E. murinus
1 - B. rudloffi
6 - L. parahybanas
Soon to arrive 4 more B. rudloffi and 1 P. pulchra!
I think individual personalities enter into this somewhere.
A recently purchased B. rudloffi made a run for me when I placed her in a new abode. (It might be a male but prior life experiences lead me to believe it's a she!)
Beautiful colours and disposition to match!
They actually performed surgery on the venom ducts of the test snakes. Measuring electrodes were attached surgically, to the venom ducts, then to a computer, to measure the actual amounts of venom used.
Prey animals used were lab mice to test the offensive strikes. To test defensive strikes, an...
Favorites
I've just started in the hobby but I'd have to go with my Lasidora parahybanas. Even at only 3-4" they have such a commanding presence. I've had a couple start small burrows beside their clay flowerpots but most stay out in the open for viewing.
I recently watched a program on a National Geographic channel dealing with the toxicity of North American poisonous snake venom during a defensive or offensive strike (at prey animals). The previous assumptions were that defensive strikes were either 'dry' or low in venom toxicity.
This...
Pet Store Conditions
I'm a volunteer agent with the Ontario Humane Society. We received a public complaint about conditions in a Fort Frances Pet Store. I found a Rose Hair Tarantula and an Emperor Scorpion in abysmal conditions. No hide areas, no water, dead food items and no substrate. For a...
Good morning,
I'm being shipped a 4" female Chaco Golden Knee this week. I'm a novice to tarantulas. Besides providing optimum housing conditions, is there anything else I can do to ease her into the new surroundings to lessen the shock of shipping?
Chris
Good morning,
I visited a local, small Pet Store after several complaints were received over the Store's conditions.
I found one neglected 4" red-legged tarantula? I'm sending an Order for the Store to comply with conditions I impose to improve conditions. I've thought of the following...
