As of this morning, the sling looks fine. Never a dull moment with having animals. @Lyrognathus this T def looked unconscious if not dead. @Nightstalker47 what you're saying makes sense, but I'm surprised it was as unresponsive to stimuli. Regardless, thanks for the responses.
So a strange thing happened today.
I have a 1/4" A. Moderatum sling housed in a small deli cup with substrate and a small shallow plastic tattoo ink vial for a water dish. Today when checking on the sling, I found it completely submerged in its water dish. I took a small paintbrush and gently...
Superworms primarily (know a breeder/best bang for buck, easy to keep and for a long time, little smell). Most of my Ts like them except a SA Avicularia metallica who gets crickets. Also feed crickets, mealworms and waxworms occasionally. Don't raise any colonies...yet
My juvie boehmei kicks hairs when I simply look at her. Skittish as can be and such a high strung gal, but she was gateway/first tarantula so she is definitely special to me.
I have an I. mira sling that's ~ 1.25", has a little trapdoor that it uses to ambush prey, fantastic feeding response, good disposition at least for the time being. Very cool and unique tarantula.
My SA pulchra charged my tongs 1 time when I was retrieving the water dish. Every time prior to and following that she has always been a really mellow, stereotypical pulchra. It's a good reminder for anyone, myself included, to never let your guard down no matter the species.
I have to pick emelia as my favorite-I don't know why but they always reminded me of a race car. The contrasting orange and black, carapace with the triangle; I just love the look of them. However, hamoris were the first tarantula I vividly remember seeing as a kid and being absolutely...
Voss, Perrier, Evian, Fiji, and San Pellegrino (even though some of my Ts roll their eyes at it)...jk I have well water so I use store brand bottled distilled or spring water: it's cheap and easy
I would venture to guess that along with the differences in moisture, protein, fat, vitamins, calcium, etc., there is likely a variation in the quanitites of different amino acids present in the feeders. I believe a healthy, well-rounded varied diet is always beneficial, regardless of the eater...
I agree with others that it's not absolutely necessary but I do feed my Ts a varied diet. If you google "reptile feeders nutritional values", there are many charts showing the differences in terms of calories, protein, fat, calcium, vitamins, etc. I feel a more varied diet could only be helpful...
GBBs are readily available for whenever you are ready. You have a good list of beginner Ts. I would add a Brachypelma emelia (Mexican red leg). I just love the look of them. Good luck!
It's a person to person thing. IMO, They are doable as a first but if you question your own abilities r/t speed, think long and hard before committing. You will need to feed, add water, remove boli/uneaten prey, etc. These spiders can move quickly and are quite skittish. I've not had any...
This winter my car heater was blowing only cold air. I had a cooler in the back with a blanket inside and some instant hand warmers. I would activate the hand warmers about 1 hr before leaving the show and the cooler was plenty warm (just make sure the warmers aren't directly touching the...
I've used hobby lobby display cases for quite a few of my tarantulas with no issues. Crystal clear, inexpensive, readily available, and easy to convert to an arboreal enclosure if needed.
